First impressions.

It is there to benefit the consumer and not the taxi driver. Doesn't seem to worry about the hours a driver sits on a rank waiting for the next fare.

I feel it is a total contradiction to open the market up (something I totally agree with) but then set price controls on it.

The government set out to derestrict the industry, it nows seems only Parliamentary time restrictions can stop it from happening.

I've never really seen the link between fare regulation and license restrictions Tom, although it is occassionaly made.

With regard to fare regulation, I think the point is made in the report that maximum fares are required to stop exploitation.

Anyone see any mention of issues like "Free and Open Access" and the KOL??

So is it fair to say that 'a clean bill of health', is no-longer on the cards?

Just read the bit that says 53% of disabled people prefer saloon cars. Whilst a mega 22% prefer wheelchair accessible vehicles!

Guess where that came from Sussexman. Brighton and Hove.

Did the report say what the percentage breakdown of wheelchair accessible vehicles verse saloon vehicles that operate in this area.

At a guess Claude, the ratio of WAVs to saloons is just under ten to one.

Didn't some on this list say (on previous lists) that this report would herald the demise of the London HC trade? Didn't it go something like- You London boys just wait the OFT report will be your undoing.

Not to mention London radios in cabs.

Wasn't it said that the KOL was a bar to free and open access?

Tom, I remember that particular study well.

Without going into too much detail, it produced a survey that met very well, with the views and hopes of the then HC trade.

I could go into more detail, but will stop with the saying "he who pays the piper, picks the tune".

Well it wasn't me, but it does say that any conditions should be proportional. Is the KOL that, some say yes, others no. But I think the biggest threat to the KOL is within the London Cab trade, not from outside of it.

As for radios not being in taxis, well I think the chances of that happening are nil, and quite right too.

I wonder whether the OFT boys factored this discrepency into the reply.

it speaks of more and improved regulation, the only change called for is abolish limit by numbers that government called for in regulatory reform.

its a very contradictory report indeed, I am very dissapointed, it even guesses as to why limit by numbers were in the first place and guesses wrongly.
