Just as a follow up to my leaky steering box at the start of this thread....

We got the seal kit and fitted it, very fiddly took a few hours (snapped off circlip like Bacon experienced), but was pleased with the results...for a while.

Few weeks later problem drips started returning (from the top end). Tried sealing it up again. Drips stopped for a while but slowly got worse. Went to see a Mechanic who knew a bit about cabs and he reckoned you could patch it with seals for a while only, but that the pressure was simply too high and if there was any wear internally the pressure would eventually cause the seals to fail. Took it off, stripped it down - yes there was indeed a 'worn groove' inside. Bought new steering box. No more problems.

I am sure if there is no wear inside then the seal kit can be a much cheaper option, but bear in mind you might just be postponing the inevitable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!!

BTW where did you get the steering box? I haven't seen new ones for sale.

All the BEST!

Good place to buy parts, but i doubt the steering boxes are 'new' they will be reconditioned. The vast majority are and usually require a exchange unit aswell.

That's where I bought my chrome bumpers from
"Fits both the front and rear of the vehicle. The bumper is manufactured and is zinc plated before chroming to ensure a very high quality."
They are total crap.

Baconsdozen, have you inquired about getting your bumpers plated at a place that rechromes classic car parts? I wonder how much it would cost... I've had a set of their bumpers on my cab for a while and to be fair, they've held out fairly well. If they start pitting badly, I will have them rechromed as they do make the cab look nicer. The old style ones are like rocking horse poo it seems...

I've just finished welding and repairing a rear bumper for my P5b Rover and rechroming alone is going to be around £400. At the moment I'm looking at metal spraying or powder coating as alternatives. I really should have known better with the chrome tinted (plating implies its of some thickness) bumpers, chroming on galvanised is a poor idea,it should be copper.
I'll probably take them off and paint them black. Autosol will be pretty hacked off though, their factory has been on overtime ever since I fitted the useless ruddy things.
