Police ‘disappointed’ after checks find faults in five Rossendale taxis

FIVE faulty taxis were issued with notices during a joint crackdown on defective vehicles.

Rossendale councillors Sean Serridge, Madeline De Souza and Patrick Marriott accompanied officers from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), who inspected six of the 13 vehicles they stopped last Friday evening.

Three were issued with a suspended, or delayed, prohibition notice for faults such as broken wing mirrors,, defective head lamps, and insufficient tyre tread.

In addition to the VOSA checks, Rossendale Council officers found damaged livery and minor damage to a front bumper, resulting in the issue of two council defect notices.

Inspecor John Fryer, of Rossendale Police said “We are happy to work in partnership with VOSA, Rossendale Council and local councillors to ensure all taxis are safe for customers to travel in.

“The lack of basic maintenance and defects found on some of the taxis was disappointing.

“A paying customer should always be able to expect a roadworthy vehicle to travel in.”

Were the police dissapointed because they didn't find more defective vehicles ?

Broken wing mirror, defective headlights (could just be a blown bulb) and damaged livery - hardly life threatening defects and I don't see how it would have made the cars 'unsafe for customers to travel in'.

I can underatand the tyre tread issue, but the article doesn't say it was below the legal limit just 'insufficient tyre tread'.

They have to justify the costs of these checks, and they do that by bigging up the trivial.

Perhaps the police should have looked in other Greater Manchester areas for those pesky Rossendale cabs

Surely 'justification' of the costs would come from having a fleet a safe vehicles and proving it every time they do checks
