Looking to start working as a taxi driver for a private hire company. I don't have my own car and I was told by the company that the best way to start off is to rent a car from a company. They said for £160 per week I can get a car which will include insurance, services and a meter fitted. Just wanted to know if the insurance covers me for personal use of the car when off shift. Do the rental companies allow the car to be used for personal use? How does it work if I have someone in my car but I am not working

You will need SDP (social, domestic, pleasure) cover if the vehicle is being used for non-business purposes - this may or may not be included in the policy.
However a way round this is to log on/sign in with the base making yourself available for hire, as long as you are 'working' you can use the vehicle for whatever you like. The only problem you will have is if you have an accident or get stopped by the police/licensing and have someone on board that has not booked through the office.

I would have thought that if you rent a car from a company that allows you to drive it off-shift then the insurance would include SDP cover. Best to check though.

Generally the insurance will cover you for domestic usage.

As for the rest, you will just have to suck it and see.
