A good mate of mine says that the RAC will not cover us in case of break down anymore. Or they will if we up grade to a far dearer tariff.

I have just rang the AA and they will honour their membership. But for how long?

Since the RAC will not cover cabs, maybe cabs should not cover the RAC work that the likes of Taxibank give out.

I believe that they had been giving out the hires for collecting RAC members whoes cars had broken down.

Your correct the RAC wont cover cabs as I found out when I broke down about a month a go. They refused to tow me and said I should have been made aware I no longer had cover they have also refused me a refund on the membership I have paid for in advance.

What does it say in the small print?

I always thought it was the person who was covered and not the car, ie, if I was covered by the AA and was a passenger in a mates car which he was driving and it broke down then I could ring the AA and they would sort out the car.

Indeed they have. Taxi's (or PH) are now only covered under a buisiness plan. The registration fee for this is small, but then come the day of the breakdown they sting you for some whopping amount of cash, and then again for every subsequent callout.

My advice? go with the AA, they cover you (the individual) for as little as £40 a year for roadside assistance.

I'm not sure if this means that you can't cover a taxi under personal membership, but what it does show that you can cover a fleet under a business plan.

I can't see anything in the AA's terms and conditions that precludes the trade, but then again I can't see anything on the RAC's site either, but maybe they just haven't updated them.

I think the posted link from the AA, is what it says, a scheme for those that run a fleet of rental taxis, or Addison Lee with its fleet of minicabs.

I took my AA membership out a few weeks ago, and i checked and double checked I was covered for the Taxi during business use, i was reassured it did.

The lady on the phone said they has increased their membership by a few thousand since the RAC made their decision to restrict theirs.

So go on, help stick two fingers up at the RAC and go with the AA.

In their small print they say:

General Exclusions (section 18 ) “Any vehicle which is used on a “hire and reward” basis (for example taxis and private hire cars) which shall include for these purposes any passenger travelling in such vehicle (even if the passenger or the driver are members of RAC). RAC can provide cover for such vehicles under the Small Business Service. Please phone 0870 333 2788 for details.”

Thus AA it is.
