Hi,

Owned my Fairway 95 since January and used it pretty much everyday since. The only issue I have is the Overdrive has never worked. I only drive around town so never really needed to use the OD.
The green light is always on and when I want to try the OD function, the Green Light will turn off when I press the switch near selector..... just that nothing else happens nor does it feel like the revs change etc.

I have had a look the best I can underneath the gearbox etc to see if anything obvious but dont really no what to look for. Can anyone tell me what common things I should check? Could it be a split pipe or something?

The Fairway drives and changes gear smoothly once warmed up. Its abit clunky when first driven when cold but is fine after a couple of minutes.

I have purchased a Workshop manual from ebay which I am awaiting delivery for so maybe things will make more sense.

Location: Used to be in Lowestoft,now escaped.
Trace the wire from the switch to the box and see if there's a twelve volt feed to the OD unit.If there is,then its a fault inside the box.

Gearbox might need an oil change, a simple fix for them Auto boxes. People ignore the gearbox oil change.

Also check that the pipe going from the airfilter to the vacuum modulator is not cut/unplugged: mine was not connected when I bought my Fairway and the gearbox was slipping when trying to rev up the engine on the motorway. Couldn't go much beyond 65 MPH and terrible noise :sad: I discovered the culprit after a few days, bought a £1 piece of pipe, fixed it, and my box is now as good as new!
Can now cruise happily at 75MPH :)

Right, Still have the OD not functioning.

I have replaced the Oil, and connected a new vacuum pipe which i had found broken between air filter and vacuum modulator.

If I turn the ignition on (without starting engine), and I press the OD button, I hear nothing. When I press the button again to turn OD off (green light on) I hear a click sound from under the cab. I would of thought I would hear a click sound when turning OD on aswell as off?

I cant seem to find any other split vacuum pipes. I guess I either have a fault within box or maybe the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator isnt producing enough vac?

So annoying as it drives and changes gear lovely when going around town etc.

Is the same kind of thing present on the TX2 (ford) engine?

I don't think you should hear anything apart from a small relay going on and off. The overdrive does not come on the instant you press the button and the green light goes out, the gearbox will make its own decision when the car speed and load are correct. I take it you have tried driving at over 50, lift off on the accelerator and let the car cruise and a second or two after, you should FEEL the overdrive kick in. There is no light change or noise (apart from a reduction in engine noise). Then, slow down to about 40 and switch the green light back on and you should feel the car change back into third.
There are a few workshop manuals on eBay. Failing that, just take it to a Auto gearbox specialist.

This must be a fairly common problem on these (especially as they get older) as I know of a couple near me both with the same fault.
