I was speaking to a fellow driver last night and she told me the transport section of the council have cut her contract to transport students to a special school

Removing a girl who is now taken by her Grandfather in his private Car and they now pay him direct Is this legal

If they pay more than 40p a mile then the volunteer scam becomes illegal.

ACTUALLY.....its illegal if theres any "element of profit", the RAC figure for running a car is used by the taxman, for a 2.0ltr car its about 65p per EVERY mile....

Only if the vehicle is entirely used for this purpose would this be considered the true cost of motoring expenses.

Once you remove standing charges and depreciation, less depreciation attributed to the mileage, then 25p is nearer the mark.

I doubt that very much, fuel is 12p/mile on its own.

Simply do the maths from the rac doc you posted. Actually the AA do a better more accurate one.

To your fuel add tyres, servicing, maintenance. £1500 plus about £100 for the increase insurance premium to allow you to be paid, gets you another 13p.

Council also has to consider how pupil gets to school when grandad is ill or car breaks down, but if grandad can cover that then nothing to stop grandad tripling that 25 p and tendering for the contract anyway.

why would he want to plate/badge/insure just take his own GK to school?

the council DOESNT have to consider what happens by the way

My wife took our son to and from a special needs school in Edinburgh, she had to get an insurance policy that had hire and reward on it, before she could get paid by the council.
After she jumped the gun and found some, I had a look and it would have been cheaper to get PH insurance

its not a payment, its a reimbursement for travel costs just like a student bus pass


what IS the problem here though?

As skippy points out you don't need a license to do a contract.

The council would have to consider that because they have taken responsibility for travel to school.

No you wouldn't do it for 75p but grandad would and he is well up.

Skippy there are other insurances but it depends on the contract terms what is needed.

And

Yes it is reimbursement that's why I would suggest anything over 25p is profit as the other costs would be incurred anyway.

the 25p staffs pay is ONE way (i.e. LOADED ONLY), which averages 12.5p, which wont cover fuel in some cars...
