cheers skip - but if that were the case why would a new mas solve the issue for a couple of weeks? chaffing wire perhaps?

Maybe the Skoda is fine but the air in Carls Island is sh*te!

I had the similar symptoms as you, The mechanic I use now for all mine and SWMBOs servicing, had a run in the car, came back went strait to the air box and removed it, showed me the exposed inners of the wires, cut and spliced them, result ran like a dream, and never another fault with it, also check all the small hoses that run along the bulkhead for splits
