Seven Kirklees taxi firms turn down fare from stranded motorist because of his dog

A STRANDED motorist was left fuming when seven taxi firms refused to pick him up – because he had a dog.

James Taylor, 33, was taking his mother Kath, a Kirklees councillor, to work in Crosland Hill on Sunday when the clutch went on his car.

James, of Mirfield, also had family pet Henry, a pure-bred shih tzu, with him.

Kath, a Tory councillor for Mirfield, was only a mile or so from work so decided to walk.

But James, Henry and the Ford Fiesta were stranded nine miles from home.

Clr Taylor’s colleagues at Lowdhams Leisure caravan firm, rescued them, managing to limp the stricken car to their premises in second gear.

Clr Taylor then rang seven local taxi firms but all refused to take Henry.

James, a Mirfield town councillor himself, said: “My mum got a list of local taxi firms off the internet and rang them.

“They were all happy to take me to Mirfield until she mentioned Henry. Then they all refused. It’s outrageous.”

Getting the bus would have meant a three-hour trip and several changes so bosses at Lowdham offered to let Henry stay with receptionist Clr Taylor while James got a £17 taxi on his own.

The taxi firms didn’t offer any kind of explanation as to why dogs were banned and James decided to investigate.

He found regulations for hackney carriage and private hire drivers under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 which say that cabbies should not refuse to take dogs without a “reasonable” excuse.

The Act says: “Guide dogs, all assistant dogs and all domestic pets, adequately restrained and controlled, other than dangerous wild animals as defined in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, must be carried in the vehicle unless there is a reasonable excuse for not carrying the animal (s). Each animal to be accompanied by a keeper.”

Where in the Misc Prov 1976. Does it say all that? Which section? No mention whatsoever that I can see.

My Byelaws state dogs carried at drivers discretion. Guide dogs must be carried.

I'm surprised they all turned down the fare flat without asking if any drivers would pick them up with the dog first but it can be an issue not just on religious grounds drivers don't want the hassle of removing the dog hairs but if the dog is small enough to travel on a passengers lap most of my drivers will say yes even those of the Muslim faith

Perhaps the dog should have walked to work leaving the stranded driver to get himself and his car home

Councillor left barking mad after taxis refuse to take dog

A Mirfield councillor had to leave his beloved pet pooch after his car broke down and taxi companies refused to let his dog in their cars.

Now Coun James Taylor wants to warn people that taxis might refuse to pick them up with their pets after he had trouble with his hound Henry.

Coun Taylor was driving his mum and fellow councillor Kath Taylor to work in Crosland Hill when the clutch on his car went last Sunday, May 5.

Luckily, one of Kath’s colleagues was able to pick up the Taylors, and four-year-old Henry who loves car journeys and had gone for the ride.

But Coun Taylor hit trouble when he was trying to book a taxi to pick up him and Henry from his mum’s office and drive them back to Mirfield.

“We rang lots of taxi companies in Huddersfield and not one would take a dog and me,” Coun Taylor said.

“None of them would bring him home so I had to come home by myself and leave the dog. He was crying and he was howling when I left him.”

Coun Kath Taylor’s colleague had to take the dog home later that day.

That night, Coun Taylor rang 30 taxi companies asking if they would take his dog to the vets, and only two agreed.

“What happens if you’ve not got a car and your dog has a heart attack in the middle of the night?” Coun Taylor said.

The law says that taxi drivers should allow pets unless they have a reasonable excuse, but Akooji Badat from the Kirklees Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Associations, said it was at driver’s discretion. “I don’t have a problem taking dogs,” he said.

“At night, some of the customers we pick up are drunk and puking, and some dogs are much better.”
