Can I suggest that you, like the stupid councillor in this fairy story, just aren't living in the real world?
In my world which, with respect, is real to me, I work in a service industry, where giving the customer what they want and a bit more has immediate tangible ££ rewards. And does the whole trade no harm at all.
Of course the humble cabbie being is at the bottom of the food chain, unfairly blamed of all ills. Unfairly all tarred with the same brush. Stupid Councillor and everyone else who perceives us in a bad light.
What should we do about it?
Giving the customer what they want?
Really?
So do customers want to queue on a taxi rank or would they prefer to improve their chances of getting a cab by letting those who want to operate one, do so?
Or, do they want to walk along a street knowing they won't be able to hail a cab because the dim stupid cabbies are clogging up ranks in the city centre while those who are refused licences and would meet their needs are stopped from doing so to protect a restrictive practice?
If 20 years in the trade has taught me anything, it is that cabbies don't give a toss about customers. They're just a means to harvest cash. And now that has become difficult they're all squealing like the pigs they are.
So keep your customer is king bullsh*t to yourself. we know you don't mean it, else you'd be throwing up your hands in horror at the restrictive practice that creates the cartel that puts cusomers at bottom of the pile.
