Father of eight launches March taxi firm with a difference

A FATHER of eight has set up his own taxi firm in March.

Simon Stiff, of Norfolk Street, Wimblington, left Dart Taxis earlier this year to set up Daddy Cabs, who specialise in airport and long distance contract work.

Mr Stiff hopes his love of technology will give him an advantage in a competitive market.

His taxis have Wifi, his website allows online bookings and passengers can pay by card.

He said: “I have always wanted to give it a go myself and I see this as a last ditch effort to make it on my own.

“I’ve done everything myself, including the promotional video on the website.

“I think it is important to move with the times and I’m a technology freak myself so I’ve introduced a few things which other taxis don’t have, such as Wifi. I just want this to work.”

Mr Stiff says the taxi business is almost unrecognisable from the one he entered nine years ago.

He said: “The business is so different to when I first started.

“Back then taxi drivers would shy away from contract bookings because there was such a strong cash trade, with lots of demand on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from people leaving the pub.

“Now things are very different and some places are even closed on Friday night.”

The inspiration for his name came from his children.

He said: “Lots of people call me Daddy Cab, mainly in my own house, so I decided it should be the name of my business.”

Do punters ask for wifi and the like on airport runs?

Or does it all come down to price?

I just hope he gets his costings right on airport runs. In my part of the world it's all down to price. 40p a mile IF you're lucky. the only airport I go to is Lydd, a 4 mile run out of town!! £10 a trip. Why go to Gatwick for £75, a 165 mile round trip?

Good luck to this guy anyway.

The airport specialists (if they can be called that) that I know all work together and share work, and at the weekend they earn fortunes.

hello I'm starting at top and going through all your comments.. but I will say I think your comment is a bit wrong if you think a drive to an airport let's say 50 miles(my closest one) and back totalling 100 miles and I do 100 miles round town city I certainly get better mpg going to the airport and less wear and tear can't really see how it's worse going to the airport!!!

sorry you wasn't interested in me Lol ... it's a nice system when you get used to it's quite difficult for the operator to sort out....But for the customer I've only had positive response a few using their Facebook login details and a few signing up... and for how much they charge it's definitely worthwhile =D>
