Hope you can help with this ? The new parking places in Gala outside the cinema are parking places and not for taxis ? so why are they taking up these places on numerous occasions . SBC regulate and licence these taxis so could you please clarify on this is it okay for me to park in the taxi rank

Early evening Friday and Saturday you cant move for them parked around the Cinema and stretching round into Tesco's Staff car park at the side of the Indian. They also stand ON THE ROAD in Channel Street talking to each other, You have to Drive round them, I reported this to the Police a couple of years back and was told it was a matter for the Council!! Presumably if I stand in the road talking to my mates I won't be causing an obstruction either and the Police won't move me onto the Pavement??
Like · Reply · 3 · Tuesday at 21:26..3 Replies.Graham Gray There is no point contacting licencing, there hands are tied, its the full council committee that needs to sort it out, but they are to busy with other none important matters like the railway and any other matters that waist our money
Like · Reply · 2 · 9 hours ago..Graham Gray The Asda rank could be in the pick up point, the Tesco one could easily be put in by removing one of the bollards so that taxis could drive strait through Green st ,to the outside car park, no other alterations are required except for the painting of the rank lines and signage.

Write a reply....Graham Gray SBC, why where no ranks provided at Asda and Tesco, they where on the original planning application's so should be there now, if this was done 8 taxis could rank at them, 4 at each supermarket.
Like · Reply · 1 · 10 hours ago..Des Thorburn Sorry Mate but they shouldnt be blocking all the Spaces around the cinema waiting to get onto the Rank, shows little thought for others, and standing on the road in channel street talking is just plain stupid, whats the problem with standing on the pavement? it's maybe not all Drivers but it makes for a bad image for all Taxi Drivers
Like · Reply · 1 · 12 hours ago..4 Replies.Graham Gray When I started my own taxi 32 years ago, we had an unwriten rule that if you did not belong to a town you did not work or pick up in that town (unless booked), since the licencing started with Zones taxis like town to town and Ace both from Melrose, and Earlston even Peebles now work in Gala.

If any of you have specific questions that you would like answered - then please send them via this online form https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/site/xfp ... anguage=en and someone from our licensing department will get back to you as soon as possible. Many thanks for your comments on this.
Like · Reply · 1 · 12 hours ago..4 Replies.Scottish Borders Council Hi Elaine - thanks for your comment. To park in the designated rank would be a breach of the traffic regulations which are enforceable in the usual way through the police. Simply by parking in the on street time limited spaces is not by itself a breach of the law by the taxi driver- they may be there for a variety of legitimate reasons, but were he /she to take a fare, this would be a breach of the terms of the taxi driver licence they hold and action could be taken by the taxi enforcement officer. We hope this clears things up and provides more clarity for you.

Write a reply....Fiona X Scott Buchan SBC can you clarify that a taxi can sit in a non taxi space, engine running and take a call from control office sending them for a fare, that to me is like picking up a fare, I think some body needs to see for themselves what the problem is what's the point in spending thousands of our the tax payers money on up grading parking spaces to make it easier to go to the bank, when really the taxi drivers reap the benefits. Surely taxi spaces for taxis other spaces for us drivers.
Like · Reply · 3 · Tuesday at 17:02 via mobile..Scott Mitchell Quite simply, there are over 100 licensed taxis in Galashiels and not enough space in the Taxi ranks! As you see it is easy for the Council to ignore the problem (above) as they still take the license fee from every taxi. The more taxis they issue a license to, the more money the Council get and obviously don't care where they are going to park.

Like · Reply · 9 hours ago..Maurice Duffy Local taxi drivers have REPEATEDLY taken this issue up with the council to no avail. In fact they have twice REDUCED the number of rank spaces, despite issuing more taxi plates every year. They are happy as long as everybody keeps paying for their licences.

Like · Reply · 2 hours ago via mobile..Graham Gray As for the bay outside the Cinema, When this bay was marked and the signage was put up, the front bay should have been painted yellow due to there being a yellow sign that states taxis only from 10 PM to 6 AM, it would have been more appropriate to have a 4 taxis only bay in the first bay at all times, leaving the bay outside the Indian restaurant free for the public.thereby giving us the rank space back that was removed from Stirling st

As taxis can be used for both hire and reward as well as for social and domestic purposes they will have every right to park in areas designated as public parking, thats a bonus. So for some idiot to ask if it were to be alright to park a private car on a taxi rank, well, they are obviously missing the point. Doh!

No skippy is an expert on how to make things difficult to follow but surely there will be extra rank spaces shortly when the new railway station opens ?

A very expensive railway cul-de-sac that'll be slower and more expensive than either the bus or the car, It'll never generate enuff profit to buy the paint to make a rank. #-o

The Scottish Parliament has to waste all those oil revenues on something !

Seriously though it's a lack of foresight there was a huge campaign to stop the line closing in the first place if councils had had any sense they would have not built roads and other developments on the trackbed knowing how important a local amenity it was and might be in the future now it's costing a fortune to reinstate !

The Scottish Parliament would need to get the oil revenues in the first place. Currently they are squandered by Westminster, as they see fit.
Always have been, ever since the first drop came ashore.
