All this "No difference between Taxi & PH"...Why is it then that so many opt to be PH and not equally as Taxi drivers?

Well there is a difference, but your point, I think, is why can't both use the bus lanes.

And the answer is, IMO, there is no good reason to exclude PH from bus lanes.

If an area has restricted hack numbers then the greater availability of work and cars for PH dictates where they work

Restricted numbers, plus round here more money earned doing ph than working off ranks. Most of the hacks are semi retired chaps who've done the hard yards.

Ah! Greater PH availability in restricted areas & reduced, if any topography knowledge test...as well as the better known ability to street hire and sit on taxi ranks; so there are significant differences, so if a driver could put himself out in money and effort they could also join the pantheon of heavenly beings resident upon the ranks :-"

The problem as I see it is this;

I DO NOT have a problem as such with PH using the bus lanes. Having said that, the problem becomes a problem, with every day motorists, when they see saloon car upon saloon car using the said lane, and thinking they can do the same! basically caused by the fact that they are not seeing the plate on the rear depicting that the vehicle can use the lane.......because you all look the same.

Most Hackneys (all in our area) are noticeable, and therefore we are not back to square one whereby everybody is using a lane designed to speed up journeys for those who leave their cars home,for what it is worth, that is my slant on it - no malice intended.

It is a funny situation whereby the PH moan about Hackneys, but are not generally prepared to make the same expenditure. My commitment back a few years ago was 25k, the London boys for a "London/Coventry cab" was a lot more. To start as a PH...........probably 3/5K, so as the saying goes - you cannot have it all.

We allow the country's PH in our bus lanes, and if any member of the public follows suit they get a ticket in the post 7 days later.

The problem you outline doesn't exist.

Trust me it does. It will vary from area to area as to how the cam system works in a given area.

Then it's an enforcement problem, not a recognition one.

To a given point you are right! However if it is going home from the office time, and they are all nose to tail, then enforcement cannot happen, because the vehicles (saloons) will not be obvious to spot or to identify.

They don't have much trouble differentiating here.
