Samaritan taxi driver is nicked

A GOOD Samaritan taxi driver who stopped to help a woman who was ill in the back of his cab - promptly got a parking ticket.

Nisar Ahmed, who was brought up in St Albans and is a taxi driver in the city, pulled over in St Peter's Street on Tuesday morning when his woman customer suffered a fit.

Within a few minutes of stopping and as he was phoning for an ambulance, a traffic warden came along and gave him a parking ticket.

He said: "I explained what was happening to the warden and he gave me a ticket. I had to stay there because when I phoned the ambulance, the woman I spoke to on the phone said to keep an eye on the girl."

Two minutes after Nisar got the parking ticket, the ambulance arrived and treated his passenger whom he then took home.

He added: "I was clueless and didn't know what to do as the passengere was clearly not well in the back. But I have taken pictures of the ambulance on my mobile phone to send to the council."

A spokesperson for St Albans District Council agreed that there was no disputing that the situation was exactly as the taxi driver had described it.

She said that parking attendants had no discretion and had to write out a ticket instantly if someone was parked on a bus stop as Nisar had been.

But the council had the power to waive tickets and she added: "Clearly these were exceptional circumstances and we would like him to contact us for an appeal form."
