So how long is a DBS check valid for, presuming there are no amendments made ?

If I don't do the update subscription and after a year the council wants to check my status can't I just show them the original check and say there are no updates/amendments ? Under the old system didn't the council automatically get told by the police if there were any convictions - is this not the case now, is it now up to me to update the DBS and inform the LA ?

I know the update service is only £13 a year, and on the face of it looks like the simplest method to avoid hassle, but it's the principle of paying for something that may not be necessary.
Actually what we're paying the £13 for isn't for anything extra (unless you need to change something) but to give OTHERS the privelige of checking our status. I wonder if I could charge the council a £13 'admin' fee each time they want to do a check, they always added extra onto the CRB for administrative purposes !

You could do that, but the council would be then be liable should you, or anyone else tell a fib. The council need to know that's everything is ok all the time now.

The police were meant to inform councils if a crime/caution/charge involved a driver, but that was incumbent on the driver actually telling the police his profession.

You don't need to update anything, that's what the £13 is for.

Many folks, including me, have multiple CRB checks, this new way means they don't have to get umpteen different CRB checks.

Just the one, and if no amendments, just that one for life.

We still have them every year. When challenged about it the Council say it's a committee decision.

The new system is different, one initial check then no-more, ever, providing you don't have any amendments to your file and you pay £13 on-line registration annually.

If your council don't like that they can argue the case with the Home Office about it.

If someone has already registered with the DBS, then the council wont be entitled to see any report, they will just check that you are not barred and issue.

It's will be a lot easier, and idiot councils like yours can lump it big time.

so the DBS takes the decision to grant or refuse a driver badge away from the LA?

i cant see that being very popular, will refused drivers have a right of appeal?

it wont be a CRB check where an employer (or body) get a copy of the persons past record then?

We've still got to have them every year, that came from the LO when these DBS checks came in this year.

To a degree yes.

It will be very hard for a council to refuse a driver that isn't barred via the DBS system.

Now clearly breaches of taxi rules wont be on the DBS system, and councils have powers to revoke for those breaches, but on the whole I think many more will slip through, just not the really bad ones.
