Took my '94 Fairway Driver to a barn with inspection ramps the other day, however the only access was on a very pot-hole ridden road, and then a farm track with very small clearance below the chassis (one of those farm tracks where the wheel tracks have worn down a foot lower than the middle).

Everything seemed fine, but whilst driving out of the farm a regular clattering noise (the same speed of the engine tick over) started. Now, when I say clatter, I don't mean a 'bag-of-spanners' type clatter, but more of a loud regular ticking/knocking noise.

The noise would not happen whilst the engine was idling, nor when the car was at high revs, but solely when the foot was very lightly on the accelerator. The noise would happen both whilst the car was stationary and moving.

Firstly, I suspected it was something to do with the exhaust, but it wasn't at all loose. I had a problem with a loose engine fan in the past, but the fan was fine and had sufficient clearance from the radiator. Then I thought wheels, but of course the sound would happen when the car was stationary, in park.

So ruling out those things, it sort of seems to come down to something in the engine - maybe gearbox?

I ran the car in the drive the day after and the sound had all but disappeared. I ran the taxi for 100 miles today, with very little problem, but the sound will come back when manoeuvring around a tight corner, again at low revs. I must reiterate, the sound is perfectly in time with the engine, and whilst it seems to come on randomly, it is very regular when you hear it.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

Well I had presumed that at first, but it happens from time to time while the car is stationery. Also the sound is louder than just a rogue stone.
