Does anyone know as to how long it would take a mechanic/technician to fit a Turbo on the "Old Style E7"?

What costs should I be looking at ?

Think you can get the turbos off the shelf from cab direct for about £600.

One on ebay for £115 inc postage.

Got to be at least a 4 hour job.

Be very careful to ensure a quality recon...main dealers on mine while still under warranty it took 3 patent recons, all wailed like banshees after a few days. Then under threat of 3 days loss of earnings they fitted the Fiat OEM that's still good after 7 years.

I have not seen the one off of e-bay yet - the ones that I have been quoted for are basically rebuilt i.e same housing - new inners. The cost is anything between £325 incl @ 1 year warrantee and £365 incl @2 year warrantee. I am no longer doing a lot of mileage - just weekends so I an some what reluctant to splash out on a new one, unless advised otherwise.

The rough time to fit one of these I need to know so I do not get strung along by a garage/fitter giving me anything from an hour or two, Or we need it for a day and a half

The time to fit, if this is covered under the warranty then go for a cheaper recon. If not as said its at least 4 hours to fit, likely to be more and this labour is the overriding cost that means you must get it right first time if the warranty only covers the part.

I am looking at worst case scenario.

The cab has had an intermittent problem for a number of years - going into limp mode.

As time has gone on with no one being able to put a finger on the problem I have learnt to improvise, keeping the vehicle in general going........some days alright, other days a right pig.

The mechanic who generally sorts my vehicle out, has connected up different computerised fault finders giving out differing fault codes. He replaced the odd part (small stuff) and we tried varying suggestions, but still had the problem.

So I decided to bite the bullet and took it to a Peugeot dealership who plugged it into their fault finder......£78.00 cost!

They found two faults 1. The Turbo sensor pipework had snapped, and 2. Air Union and Vacuum pump not supplying enough vacuum............Both would need replacing and would sort the problem & were actually fitted at the grand cost of..........£473.12.

I was told that it was sorted and road tested! I drove it out of the compound and realised straight away that it was not right, it went into limp mode about a mile down the road, so I took it back and left it there for them to sort it out, it turned out the "Technician" had not connected the pipe up properly ( so much for the apparent road test). They rang me to say that it was ready, had been road tested, it was alright, and that it was 100 times better and ready to go.

I took it out, unfortunately it still did not feel right - no zip or real acceleration to note. It was a Friday so I decided to give it a try to see if it might click into place so to speak. The cab was as bad as ever so I rang them on Saturday lunchtime, only to be told that they could not get hold of the "technician" who worked on the cab until Monday morning. Monday came and I received a call to say that the "Tech" said that the "Turbo" would need replacing as HE NOTICED that it was not kicking in like it should on the road test (different to what they told me), failing that the engine might need replacing!!!!!!

Realising that they thought that they would replace my cab bit by bit - I gave that thought a miss and have taken it elsewhere. The fault showing up at this different garage is to do with the "Air Mass" system - I will know more tomorrow.

Should this turn out to be the case............then I shall be taking Peugeot to task over this........BIGTIME.

Try unplugging the air mass sensor (back of air filter), if this makes no difference to performance then this could be a chief suspect for replacement. Around £80 on flebay.

ask what the codes were or get your own diagnostic

ive had turbo problems since may 8th but i know what it is and it wont be getting the advised new turbo at the price they wanted....dear me no

most garages either change everything or go for the biggest possible bill

It has been plugged into 4 different computer fault code finders!! The system it would seem is no better than Microsoft fault finding service if you have a problem with your own personal computer i.e going from point to point and curing the problem by a series of elimination. It would seem that the codes are just indicative of what MIGHT be wrong, not necessarily what is! Off today to the 4th lot of technicians/mechanics - the bill so far over £600, and the cab worse than ever, going up a hill/gradient is like pulling a caravan.

Plus the time it takes to set up, I reckon 5½ hours.

A little bit of food for thought as no one came up with the solution to the problem I had.

For years on and off my E7 would go into limp mode, only for it to be rectified by turning the engine off and restarting it.

I took it to a main dealer in total desperation.......what a massive waste of time as they are basically fitters - NOT mechanics in the true sense, wanting to replace the cab engine, turbo, this that and the other bit by bit (all new parts - we don't do repairs)............so that was a case of - foff.

Anyway, after taking it to 4/5 different places, I came across a guy who has been in the business ( his own small garage) for close on 40 years! At the back of the top of the engine (close to hot pipes - could be linked to the manifold) he said that there are some (his description) butterfly wings! He tied these open, apparently letting in more air. It works a bloody treat with the cab flying like nearly new.

Does anyone recognise from my description as to what was actually done

Result =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> Just goes to show these old mechanics can still cut the mustard.
