Following in convoy, these taxi drivers made sure their pal Albert Nicholson got the send-off he deserved.

The much-loved Tyneside taxi driver spent his 46-year career ferrying passengers across the region and was extremely popular among his fellow drivers.

So, to honour his memory, around 40 taxi drivers formed a convoy and followed his hearse in a procession to the 64-year-old’s funeral yesterday.

Streets around Albert’s home in North Shields were full of taxi drivers wanting to pay their respects to the father-of-four who died after suffering a heart attack on August 5.

Albert’s son Paul said the family were deeply touched by the show of affection from his dad’s colleagues.

“It is lovely to think he was so well thought of,” said Paul.

“The florists in North Shields apparently had to work overtime to deal with all the flowers for him.

“I know he had a lot of friends and was very popular,” he said.

Albert was born and bred in North Shields and started working as a taxi driver when he was 18.

Over his 46-year career he worked for numerous taxi firms across the region and became a much-loved taxi driver among locals.

“He worked for 46 years as a taxi driver and worked in every taxi office,” said Paul.

“It was a massive send-off and it is quite unusual having so many taxis go in convoy to a funeral.

“We had to tell the police in case we needed an escort as there were to be so many people coming.

“He really loved his job as a taxi driver and he had only stopped a week before he had a heart attack.

“He just had his own personality with customers and he got on with them all in one way or another,” said Paul.

Albert, who had 24 grandchildren, was described as a man who loved spending time with family. His funeral service was held at Tynemouth Crematorium. Albert is survived by his wife Jennifer, four children Paul, Alison, Sharon and Caroline, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

What a wonderful show of love and respect. Such a shame that he had only had 1 week of retirement

I decided long ago, I'm never retiring.

And the sad tale about this fella merely confirms my view.
