Minicab driver thought he was 'a goner' after being attacked and robbed by two women in South Bank

A Minicab driver has said he thought he was "a goner" when he was set upon by two women who robbed him of his takings.

James Stubbs was left shaken after the early morning attack which saw his night’s earnings of around £200 taken from him.

Mr Stubbs, who was also the victim of a similar Minicab attack five years ago, was set upon as he dropped three women off in South Bank.

He says he picked three women up from an address, drove them to the Tesco store in South Bank before taking them back to the address.

He says it was as he dropped them off at around 2am on Sunday, that he was robbed.

The 43-year-old from Grangetown who drives for Kwik Cars said: “I didn’t know what to think.

“I thought I was going to be a goner. I’ve been left shook up by it.”

The police were alerted to the incident by a passer-by who had heard the confrontation.

But this is not the first time Mr Stubbs, a dad-of-five, has been beaten up doing his job.

In 2008 the Gazette reported how he suffered a suspected broken nose, cuts and bruises after he was head-butted and punched by two thugs who tried to snatch his takings after refusing to pay their £4 fare.

But despite being attacked twice during his 15-year career as a Minicab driver Mr Stubbs said he would be returning to work.

The grandad-of-three said: “It’s my job at the end of the day. I have to do it to make money.”

Two women have now appeared in court in connection with the incident.

A 30-year-old and a 38-year-old appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with robbery.

They were remanded in custody until their first appearance at Teesside Crown Court on September 9.

A third woman, 35, who was arrested was later released without charge.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact DC Ian Cox, of Redcar and Cleveland CID, on the non-emergency 101 number.

The fact that these people were remanded in custody indicates they are not nice folks.
