Ban for boozed-up taxi licence holderA MOTORIST who has just gained a taxi driver’s licence drove while more than three times the legal alcohol limit, Selkirk Sheriff Court, pictured, heard on Monday.
Jobless Kenny Bertram, 25, who lives with his parents in Primrose Bank, Galashiels, appeared from custody and admitted the offence which happened in his hometown on Friday night.
The court was told that police received a tip-off from an unidentified member of the public to look out for a white Vauxhall Vectra as the driver was suspected of being under the influence.
Officers stopped the vehicle in Currie Road and Bertram was found to have a breath/alcohol count of 114 microgrammes – the legal limit is 35.
Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said his client had a previous drink-driving conviction from seven years ago, adding: “It has dawned on him since the incident it was a stupid thing to do. He has just got a taxi driver’s licence, so it is pretty devastating for him. He has spent three nights in custody.”
Sheriff Kevin Drummond reduced the disqualification period from five years to 40 months due to the early guilty plea and fined Bertram £400.
