Passengers left trapped for almost an hour after Metro collides with minicab

Passengers on a Metro which collided with a minicab were trapped inside for almost an hour before being released.

There were 14 people on board the Metro train when it collided with a white Blueline minicab near Callerton Parkway Metro station in Woolsington, Newcastle, at around 6pm on Monday night.

No one on board the Metro, which was travelling to South Hylton, was injured but passengers had to wait 50 minutes before they were given permission to disembark.

A Nexus spokesman said: “They were on the train for about 50 minutes but our staff were making sure they were ok.

“It was on the advice of the police we could not let them off.”

Passengers were then taken to the nearby Premier Inn and taxis were arranged to take them to their intended destinations.

The Blueline minicab involved in the crash had to be lifted off the track by a crane and this happened between 8.45pm and shortly after 9pm.

“Once the car was off the track staff did a check on the infrastructure of the track and signals and everything to make sure it was in working order,” said a Nexus spokesman.

The Metro service along the Airport line was suspended and the A696 and Woolsington Road were both closed while a clear up and investigations got underway.

The service was back up and running by 9.43pm.

A Nexus spokesman said initial investigations and checks revealed there were no faults with the crossing or Metro train. Investigations are continuing.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “The driver of the car was treated at hospital for shock but was otherwise uninjured. Enquiries are on-going to establish the circumstances of the collision.”

It is not known how long the investigation will take and no one has been arrested in connection with the collision.

When contacted by the Chronicle, Blueline said no one wished to comment on the incident at this time.

This is not the first time a Metro train and car have come into close contact.

In 2010 we reported on the court case of Newcastle United physio Derek Wright who was convicted of driving without care and attention and failing to observe the stop signal after narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision at the Callerton Parkway level crossing.

The court heard the red light at the crossing had been on for more than 25 seconds when Wright approached in September 2009. He pleaded guilty to the offences and told the court he had suffered a momentary lapse in concentration, which meant he did not see the warning signals.

Last year Metro owners Nexus fitted cameras at two level crossings, Kingston Park and Bank Foot, to catch drivers who run through stop signs when trains are approaching.

Equipment has been in place at Callerton Parkway since 2008.

Don't they have barriers that come down so the cars can't get onto the lines when there is a train approaching?

Blueline sends one car to delay tram, so that the rest of the scabs at the airport can get more work
