You'd save even more if the driver lost a couple of stones and only picked up skinny people, preferably with no luggage

If it were really about saving weight to aid economy and emissions they they would probably save more by removing the myriad of emissions and fuel saving devices, There's and all of their respective relays and feck knows what else, a needless 100lb in eco-crap....I'm guessing you would save more fuel and lower your emissions if the poor old car didn't have to lug all the Eco-gimickry around everywhere it went... #-o

I keep meaning to get some tyre sealant, you put it in your tyre and if you get a puncture it instantly seals the hole. Although in over ten years of cabbing I've never had a full on puncture needing the spare putting on, plenty of slow punctures with the nail/screw still in the tyre though.

Similar to this (there are other types) http://www.slime.com/shop/tire-sealant/

Thoughts ?

Tyre fitting company's love this stuff. they often charge extra for fitting a new tyre if you have put this stuff in.

I'd be looking at a different fitters that don't charge then, most don't. It's water soluble so shouldn't incur much extra work for a fitter, and even if they charge an extra £1-£2 it's still cheaper than a puncture repair.

At least one, I'd wrap some duct tape round it first to keep the sealant in though

Nothing will be as good as a proper spare with a good tyre, a jack and an idea how to change it, you might have no phone signal, no torch and no help but at least you can get yourself out the cack

and make sure, if you have alloys with locking nuts, that you have the "key" and it works BEFORE you need it too at 3am....

And make sure the garage gives it back to you after they've removed a wheel, not as happened to me and only realised months later when I needed to change a tyre #-o

You will also need to carry a calibrated torque wrench as well.

Can't say I've ever needed one.
Tyre places tell you to come back and re-tighten after a couple of hundred miles anyway.

Wheel nuts are supposed to be tightened to a certain torque. To loose and they may come undone, to tight and the threads may stretch and then shear off. This is why you are supposed to have them checked after 200 miles.
