Concern at ‘disturbing’ defects among Aylesbury taxis

Taxi drivers have defended the standard of their vehicles after a ‘disturbing’ number of defects were discovered in the latest round of spot checks in Aylesbury.

Eight of the 13 vehicles stopped and checked had ‘serious defects’ and had their plates removed in an operation by police, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and licensors.

These eight will only be reissued with a licence once problems are fixed and an MOT is completed.

Six fixed penalty notices were also issued during the operation on September 4. One of these was issued to a driver who was ‘not in a position to have proper control of his vehicle’ as his CB radio set was under his seat, two were for defective number plates, two were for defective tyres and one was for an exhaust that had broken away.

Sergeant Simon Hills said: “These results are somewhat disturbing, we rely on the professionalism of our private hire and hackney carriage drivers to keep their passengers safe on the roads.

“To find that 85% of the vehicles stopped were carrying a defect is of concern to the police, VOSA and the taxi licensing authority.

“We will therefore be conducting further checks to ensure the safety of the public.”

The Aylesbury Private Hire Association has moved to reassure people following the inspections, claiming the results do not mean the overall standard of vehicles in the town is poor.

The group said in a statement: “Passenger comfort and safety is of a paramount importance to our members.

“Their vehicles and drivers face stringent vetting and testing in Aylesbury.

“We are always striving to ensure that vehicle standards are kept high and in line with Aylesbury Vale District Council policy.”

The group also called for firm Call a Cab to be removed from the town.

The state of cabs goes back to what I've been harping on about in other posts on here: get your car checked REGULARLY, not wait until the compliance test to find out what's wrong with it! Sorry, but I've got no sympathy for those caught.

The thing is with these tests though is that they PRE CHECK the vehicles and only pull those in for inspection which have an obvious fault such as a bulb out so the high percentage is not correct as they will have PRE CHECKED 2 or 3 times as many cars as they pull in for inspection

Says a lot for checking your vehicle every day. I often see cars with lights not working day after day; it makes me wonder what other defects may have gone un-noticed day after day.

They do like to big up these operations and make it look like they've taken deathtraps off the road. Out of the eight with 'serious defects' two were for defective number plates and one a faulty exhaust - how exactly do these affect passenger safety ?

Tyres, brakes, suspension and steering fair enough, everything else is trivial and doesn't warrant comments such as 'disturbing number of defects'.

Isn't this the place where plates exchange hands for £50K?

Up to £80,000 is the latest we are being told.

Yes the privatehire who have the such stupid local fare of £3 so most dont bother with looking after their cars as they simply cant afford it with such low fares they just ignore problems,
90% of the privatehires are death traps Ive even seen a few whos vehicles are expired and still driving about not with just an expired plate but also a 10years old+ vehicle which should be off road.

What ever you do don't tell us what the price is then.
