Drunken fare punched taxi driverA DRUNKEN taxi passenger has been ordered to pay a Southampton cabbie £400 compensation after punching him in the face and then damaging his vehicle’s wing mirror.
Melvin Sampays, 25, asked Raji Manichen to drive him from London Road to Cedar Road. In Lodge Road he asked him to stop and pointed to someone in the road, indicating that person would pay.
Prosecutor Tim Moore said Sampays started to walk off as Mr Manichen asked for his £6 fare.
Sampays then stopped, squared up to the cabbie and hit him, causing a cut and bruising to his face.
The city crown court heard Sampays then walked into a house in Lodge Road.
The driver waited outside and Sampays emerged with four other men and a dog, and ran towards him. The cabbie got back into his car but Sampays struck his wing mirror.
Sampays, of Malwood Gardens, Totton, admitted causing actual bodily harm and damage. He also received an eight-month suspended sentence, 12 months supervision and a direction to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work for the community.
