but the most obvious and universally recognisable difference is that one simply has a sign reading "TAXI" on it and the other doesn't. How much simpler can it get than that!

There you go then, an E7 with no taxi sign or rooflight ceases to be a taxi/hack

Sorted

I get it, was brought up in Knowsley, and new the difference. A lot just don't seem to get it in st helens

You could paint every hack bright yellow with pink polkadots, and force every PH to drive only saloon cars in a fetching shade of turquoise and lime green checks.
It will not make any difference. Joe public cares more about the cost and how long they have to wait, than what they see as a petty squabble amongst taxi drivers.
Most do know the difference, they just don't care.

TBH It's you who doesn't get it, not the public of St Helens.

You and your compatriots should be careful what you wish for because, as others have said, you could well end up with some stupid colour scheme foisted on you or they may further restrict your choice of hack motors.

Also, if it were me being refused a PH plate for a perfectly good 6/7 seater, just because the local hacks don't like it, I wouldn't bother appealing through the courts.

what he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ with bells on

Obviously. You haven't invested in your business in the same way as a hack. Also the issue of illegal plying for hire.

You mean he didn't pay £xyz to somebody for a public licence?

Now that's the issue you need to be tackling with your LA, instead of dictating what can and can't be a PH.

Looking on the St Helens list of hack vehicles I could easily spend MORE on a Mondeo!

Ignoring Lti/Fairway/Carbodies the NEWEST is a 06 plate the oldest is... a Y reg?

The real point of all this is that the St Helens hacks are losing ground to the PH trade, so instead of ideas for promoting trade they try to ban one ex-hack E& from being plated PH....yeah, thats gonna make a big difference

not

I also note that not 1 hack on the list can carry 7 or 8 passengers, theres a PH market for you!

You haven't looked properly then, as the oldest is an x plate, but then you are also forgetting the goodwill for the plate

We are not allowed to carry no more than 6. Unlike private are rate doesn't change if we have more than 4 pass unlike PH, we don't go on a different rate just cause its snowing unlike PH, everything we do is governed by the council unlike PH.
