Carlisle taxi driver's CB radio request rejectedA taxi driver with a passion for CB radios has been told he cannot have one fitted in his cab.
Trevor McPake, of Carlisle, had applied to the city council’s regulatory committee for permission to install a transmitter so he could use it during quiet periods.
These devices were banned from taxis years ago as some unscrupulous drivers were using them to intercept two-way radio calls and hijack other operators’ fares.
But, appearing in front of the committee at Carlisle’s Civic Centre this week, he argued that drivers now use digital radios which cannot be intercepted in this way.
He said CB radios were simply a hobby and he wanted to be able to use one while he was sat on the rank, when other drivers are listening to music or using social networking sites.
However the committee refused the application, saying they did not want to see a return of CB radios to taxis. It was a majority decision.
