I have no problem with fines for refusing account work

I would. What legel right do they have to issue fines?

None, I think they'll need a consumer credit licence.

given that there are more mobile phones in use than there are actually people resident in the UK i doubt anyone uses the freephones anymore especially with most mobile tariffs having free minutes to landlines and mobiles

In a resort I would expect high usage of free-phones.

None whatsoever, in fact by demanding money under threat of an undesired action they themselves could be commiting a serious crime (10 year imprisonment) ;

Extortion ;
Extortion (also called shakedown, outwresting, and exaction) is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion.

Coercion ;
Coercion is the practice of forcing another party to act in an involuntary manner (whether through action or inaction) by use of intimidation or threats or some other form of pressure or force, and describes a set of various different similar types of forceful actions that violate the free will of an individual to induce a desired response.

Extortion, which is not limited to the taking of property, involves the verbal or written instillation of fear that something will happen to the victim if he or she does not comply with the extortionist's will.

And possibly ;

Blackmail ;
Blackmail is the use of threats to prevent another from engaging in a lawful occupation.

Exactly you signed the deal presumably?

Why not call an EMERGENCY meeting to consider the situation, and insist only those present can vote, go armed with a written proposal and organise supporting members to attend and vote ??

wish you luck =D> =D>

Or when you get called to the office set your phone to record the meeting and if they fine you make a complaint to the police of extortion/blackmail/coercion and see if they agree, or maybe there's some other offence that's been commited (demanding money with menaces?)

Only takes one court case and a company owner in prison for all fines to stop. And it doesn't have to involve money, any threat that something undesirable will happen if you dont comply could be seen as an offence.

I really despise being told what to do by the people who's wages I pay, if anything that makes ME the employer.
