I haven't been in the trade that long, just a few years but have heard from others what it used to be like. Ive just finished a sat shift and couldn't believe how empty the pubs were. One i went past didn't have a single customer in there at 8pm.

Some of the bigger pubs here don't open until at least 9.00 PM. I put this down to the later closing time. People only have so much to spend and if the pubs and clubs close later it stands to reason that people will start later in the evening. It has just pushed everything back by 2 hours.

Tell me about it ! I only started cabbing as a temporary measure until I found another decent job, 12 years later I'm still looking

its a proper driving test, you are allowed 6 minor faults and no majors. I got 5 minor and 2 of those were indicating faults, examiner told me 1 more and he would have failed me. My learner driver kid has got her test tomorrow and she is allowed 13 minor falults so it is quite stiff.
You have 40 mins of ordered driving, 10 mins of free driving were they tell you to follows signs for some place or other.
Taxi law questions, these were..... what do you have to do with left property, when should you have your license on you when driving a licence vehicle
And then the highway code questions.
I did have 2 driving lessons beforehand as well, cos at £80 a chuck I didn't want to do it again

Good Luck Jman

Like I said if you put a car on it will cost around £250-£300pw to run.

If we work on the basis you make £10ph (sometimes more, sometimes less) on the meter you will have to work at least 25 hours just to cover your expenses.
If you rent a car for the week you'll pay at least £100 for the rent and another £50 fuel, again that's 15 hours before you turn a profit.
If you go on a split bag you give half to the owner (after fuel) and keep the other half, so if you do a ten hour shift at £10ph and put in £20 fuel you get £40 and the owner £40.
If you do a ten hour shift in any other job you'll get at least £63.

It would appear I have wasted my time and money then, wonder how the Asians manage to make a living at it. On my written knowledge test there was 2 of them came over from Sheffield for it. They both did give up on the written routes though, the first question they asked was when could they sit it again

Because some aliens can live up to six month's off of one small bowl of rice, half a potato, one small pack of Rizla papers and half an ounce of old Holborn...or was that WWII Japanese Snipers?

Well, the CRB check went off on Monday, the medical is done then I really am gonna find out wether part time pays or not
My big worry, being as I don't want to go to the expense of plating my own car, is wether I can get in a car when I am free to drive it.
Am I right in thinking operators have more drivers than cars for rent?

Depends on how good the circuit is.

If they can offer you any shifts you want then maybe the firm is a two bob outfit, but basically you will just have to suck it and see.

Don't expect to earn bundles for the first few months.
