Woking taxi driver's anger as he was 'forced to go green' too early

A Woking taxi driver says he is out of pocket because he was forced to go eco-friendly too early.

All drivers were told they had to get greener engines by the new year.

But now the borough council has extended that deadline by 11 months.

Cab driver Andrew Ness is furious as he had already bought a new car: "I had a perfectly good vehicle, a lot better vehicle than what I have now.

"I was told by Woking Borough Council that if we hadn't change by January 6th, we would be off the road and couldn't work.

"I am out of pocket by £210 per month.

"It isn't my fault, I have only done, and other drivers have done the same, what Woking Borough Council told us we had to do."

The Leader of the Council, John Kingsbury, said: "I understand the disappointment felt by those drivers who, whilst experiencing hardship, have already changed vehicles as their new licences became due.

"The decision of the Executive to allow local taxi and private hire drivers facing hardship more time to acquire new vehicles, was not taken lightly.

"We considered carefully the representations we received and decided, on balance, that we should provide local drivers who were suffering hardship and whose licenses are due for renewal later in the year, some additional time to change their vehicles.

"It is not, however, a relaxation of our standards, just a little longer to allow those drivers to adapt.

"The drivers who do take advantage of the additional time we have allowed for them to change their vehicle will only get a license for a maximum of 11 months, at a full year price, and then they will have to renew again within 2014.

"While this may have caused upset to some drivers, I hope those that are currently aggrieved by our decision will quietly reflect and understand that we have acted in the best interests of the wider taxi and private hire trade following representations from their trade and community representatives."

Is it possible that he could take this to a "Small Claims Court"? and claim for a loss incurred i.e 11 months x £210 = £2310.

The point being is that they have made him become out of pocket for that sum of money. If he can prove (and I think he can) that his previous vehicle still had life in it..............then he has incurred a loss.

The council decided on a new policy, rights or wrongs of that are irrelevant at this time.

Pressure from the trade forced the council to delay the implementation of that new policy.

Now do we say well done to that council for listening, or do we say they are f*** wits for listening, as the mush in the article is saying?

perhaps the idiots in Woking should have been members of a national body that could have given them advice in the first place?
