Hi All.
I've Just joined as I was thinking of applying for PH license to drive in milton keynes. I would like to know if anybody could tell me a bit about the Knowledge for milton keynes. I need to know what areas to concentrate on in milton keynes for the questions in knowledge test, and how many questions are there likely to be in the test.
It will be my first time as a private hire driver, and the forum as been a great help.

Thanks in advance.

Yes for the first time. I have thought about it for many years, and decided to take plunge. I've lived in MK most of my life, and know my way round the city fairly well, but never really took any notice of street names. Been reading local map for a few weeks now, and was wondering if anyone could help with what areas of MK to concentrate on for the knowledge test.

Drive round and take notice of the streets and landmarks.

A lot of areas don't require a knowledge test to be a PH driver.

I know from reading threads on here there's an awful lot of ph and hacks in MK competing for not much work. Bear in mind as a ph you won't be able to sit on the rank by the station or anywhere else and pick up fares, it all has to be pre-booked. I think you'll also find a few big firms have also got the place sewn up. There's no magic pot of gold in this industry at the moment. Good luck though. You'd be better off bus driving, at least the money's regular.

Milton Keynes requires knowledge test. I know that much.

I've seen all the hackney rank queues, and that's why I choose PH. I plan to go and have a chat with some of the local firms in the near future.
Just looking to make some kind of living at the minute. I will worry about the pot of gold later. :P
Not planning to start until march time. I plan to give it a year, and see how we go. Other Half works and can cover household bills, so takes a bit of pressure off.

Nothing wrong with that fella.

What some members have said is that it's f***ing grim in Milton Keynes, but I wish you well.

Spiv bosses : viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23584

You'll probably end up working 80 hours for £20 a week, but good luck.

Fly solo, get your own website, own school contracts, own business, you will save £8000 in base rents...

No private hire vehicle older than 7 years can initially be licensed.

The current licence fee for Hackney Carriages is £172.00 and for private hire vehicles £154.00. This includes an internal and external plate for hackney carriages and an external plate for private hire vehicles. Both licences are for no longer than six months. Brackets or Magnets may also be required for the vehicle, current fee £20.00 for brackets/£25 for magnets.

Both Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers are normally licensed for three years, current fee for a hackney carriage driver is £184.00 and a private hire driver £136.00.

New applicants must first undertake an Induction course and pass a test of knowledge of the area, current fee £354.00.

If you fail the knowledge test there will be a fee £119 to re-sit the test.

All applicants must satisfy the Council that they are entitled to work in the United Kingdom. They must also be medically certified as to their fitness to drive, this can be done at approved medical centers at drivers own cost after collecting a pro-forma from taxi licensing; a current DVLC drivers licence granted under Part 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 for at least one year and also must undergo a criminal record check for which a charge of £64.00 will be made.

If they have any convictions and/or cautions for motoring or other offences, applicants will be interviewed to establish whether they are "fit and proper" persons to be licensed. However, if the applicant elects not to do so and convictions and/or cautions are subsequently found which bar the grant of a licence no refund of fees will be made. Checks are always made and applicants should be aware the Council has the power in law to refuse applications in certain circumstances.

Private hire operators are licensed annually, current annual fee £272.00 and must establish that they are "fit and proper" persons before being granted a licence.

A private hire driver may only obtain bookings from a licensed operator and must sign a declaration to that effect on the application form. Having obtained a licence and before commencing work the licence holder must ensure the Council is aware of the name of the operator from whom bookings are obtained.

If you want to apply for a licence please click the link on the left hand side of the page to download our application forms and guidance.

You should note that after your initial appointment the process of obtaining a driver licence can on average take twelve to sixteen weeks if all stages are completed succesfully - however delays are possible based on the speed of the criminal record checks returning to the service and how quickly drivers pass the knowledge test.

When you are ready to take the Induction course and knowledge test please telephone TAXI LICENSING SECTION 01908 252860 to arrange an appointment to produce your:

birth certificate or passport (non UK citizens must have a current passport or UK travel document),
proof of address (i.e. utility bill or bank statement no more than 3 months old)
driving licence (card & paper counterpart),
application forms photos (two per licence required) and
pay the appropriate fee.

PLEASE NOTE A TEMPORARY NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER OR AN OLD BRITISH VISITORS PASSPORT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE.
