Cab passengers 'refused' short city rides home at night



Cab passengers in Birmingham are being urged to report Hackney carriage drivers who refuse to take their fare at night.

The city council call follows claims that some drivers are refusing to pick up passengers that only want to travel a short distance.

One passenger claims she was left feeling " vulnerable and angry" after a cabbie refused to take her on the short journey from Birmingham's Broad Street to her Five Ways home.

Mohammed Taj, of Birmingham Black Cab Drivers' Association, said he believes "out of town" drivers are responsible.

What would you lot call too short?

Would you refuse to take someone who only wanted to travel under 500 yards?

I have literally picked somebody up at the pub and driven across the road because they are too slow and frail on their feet

I've picked up a couple of drunk non-locals late on a Saturday night and taken them to a hotel I could see in my rear-view mirror. (West St rank to Hotel Umi, Brighton).

I tried telling them and pointing to where it was, but they thought I was trying to refuse the fare and spent a godd few minutes ignoring my directions and eventually insisted I take them, even going as far offering me a tenner for the journey.

So, meter on, turn round, 50 yards, turn corner, meter off, "that'll be four pounds twenty please", with an immediate response from the back of "you should have told us it was this close". Still got the promised tenner without any argument.
