I attended our Council Licensing committee meeting last night because they were discussing my proposal for a tariff increase. This was passed unanimously by the committee. But another subject was raised. Wheelchair accessible vehicles.
One of the committee is in a rather large chair that can't fit into any of the available vehicles in the town. Another member of the committee stated that only 3 years previously she had been on an appeals committee that had agreed to license a vehicle that could take any size wheelchair. I pointed out that the vehicle in question was one of my vehicles and indeed it could take any size wheelchair. She asked where it was now if, as had been stated, there were none available? My answer, It had to come off the road due to the Councils age policy. =D> =D> =D>

She is not an idiot. She is my new best friend. I have a feeling that the age policy will be coming under scrutiny by some Councillors now.

Taken to the ultimate conclusion (on behalf the vocal minority) we should all run WAV's 24/7 for the very biggest of wheelchairs, patently that's a ridiculous requirement

Whats the max age Grandad

10 years for conversions and no age limit for purpose built. The new draft policy is 12 years for both.

The vast majority of Councillors in this Borough are Tory, we have 18 Tory's, 5 Labour, 4 independent and the Mayor who is Labour but does not vote.

I don't want it back. The Councillor in a wheel chair does but not me.

ask her how many times a year, and to what monetary total she would spend in a WAV to her needs, and ask how she gets around without one being available...

The Councillor in a wheel chair is a he. It is an electric wheelchair and has a range of around 7 miles so most of the time he doesn't need a taxi. He was up for Mayor a couple of years ago and that would have been a problem for the council because they would have had to find a vehicle from somewhere to get him to all the functions.
