He is saying that the Madeline story/recollection of events looks dodgy. Coupling this young boy to their situation, he then says.........this makes it even dodgier. - he is doubting their story. When you doubt someone, you are in effect calling them a liar in a backhanded form.

Lots of people doubt their story. It is well documented in newspapers and even in a book. I can't remember anyone being taken to court about it.

We can go around and around in circles over this one. Google it and you will find numerous articles that are causing them great stress, to the point that Mrs MacCann unsurprisingly has contemplated suicide. To my mind unless there is out and out evidence pointing to any person showing that they have committed a criminal act then you should have obviously have your thoughts - to actually say it, is a totally different matter.

I even doubt it to this day.
