dont get why companies like ours dont grow a set and refuse these jobs,

If the bosses had to do them they probably would refuse.
But we all know they keep the best school jobs for themselves.

Dropped off at the far edge of town near to the motorway, an area where there's very little work. Spotted four of our drivers parked up and decided to have a chat.

I asked why they weren't plotted where there is a chance of getting a job, turns out they each drove bosses cars and had school runs ranging from £85 to £120 every day. They had around a 4 hour wait between dropping off and having to go back for the return and so they decided they'd rather sit and chat all day, maybe do 2-3 jobs, than drive back into town where they might have done 6 or 7 jobs in those four hours and then have to head back onto the motorway.

And they say driving a cabs hard work :?

The rest of the fleets school contracts range from £4.00 to £10.00 each way, the regulars not assigned to a car can be as low as £2.60 each way, no surprise then that half the fleet logs off when the bookings are due out

How can they FORCE anyone who is self-employed to work at set times?

Which would give the drivers the right to claim "worker under the direction of the company" status which would allow them too manage their own tax affairs BUT would require the company to pay holiday pay and give employment rights ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,go for it :D

well.... the continuity of supply of vehicles is obviously required for a taxi firm to operate, so everyone nipping off at 4pm leaves them short of cars, then they cant supply punters with cars, then punters stop ringing....once they start using another firm they dont come back, and why should they

the parents of kids on school contracts can be a mixed bag, some appreciate good timekeeping and service, some (usually the ones with big houses and 5 cars on the drive) just think they are landed gentry

I had one Tuesday morning where the job was 200 yards down the road for their kids, low and behold the mother came out still in her night clothes and got in the motor, she said, "I'm coming with them then you've got to bring me back here."

Bone idle tvvat.

I'd tell the mum that the contract time is when I'll collect and deliver the child.

the only time shes not got her way was once when she wanted the kid taken the opposite way 6 miles, i asked the county who said they only pay from home-school/school-home, not sure about anything voluntary/not education though yet (its swimming club)
