In a rare moment of joined up thinking, Wirral M.B.C have finally realised that a privater hire car may not be totally shagged out on its eighth birthday and have now increased the age limit to ten years.

If I buy wisely I could get a decent car plated for about a £1000.

I don't think it'll make any difference to the numbers entering the job but it will mean a newbie can become an owner driver easier.

As opposed to a badly rebuilt, Cat C settle car that has been welded together in a backstreet garage?

is that for its first plate?

I can only see that the age limit has been raised for vehicles with a plate, not new grants

so dont celebrate just yet

Most areas have an age limit of about 3-4 years for new car to "the system".

its in place to ensure the driver is in constant debt and therefore more considerate of council policy and the whims of PH operators - it has little to do with the service the public receive or cutting emissions - its purely and simply designed to keep the driver in his rightful place.

I would recommend that you do not buy a car which is more than nine and a half years old.

just a slight whiff of bitterness and a smidgeon of sarcasm there

And a large helping of truth.

LA's (and the licensing committee) of many areas have this wonderful image of their rank being populated by gleaming new identical, uniform cars, i have two LA's around me that border one that does not, so cross the border and you can run a X reg smiley swb minbus with 8+driver seats held together with duct tape...

I think you'll find you won't be able to plate it at 10 years old.

quite so it seems

hence the LA saying "dont buy a 9 1/2 year old car"
