Family's tribute to minicab dispatcher as police hunt 'man in deerstalker hat'

Mohammed Yasser Afzal: detectives are trying to trace a man who was carrying a JD Sports plastic bag and wearing a hat

The family of a taxi controller knifed to death in east London today paid tribute to him as police revealed they are hunting a man seen fleeing the scene dressed in a deerstalker hat.

Yasa Afzal was stabbed seven times in the neck, back and torso by a man inside his office at Access Cars in Broadway, Stratford.

The 22-year-old was rushed to the Royal London Hospital after the attack on Monday but died later.

Today his cousin told the Evening Standard that Yasa was a “bubbly and helpful” young man who loved his family.

Mohammed Arfan Khaliq said: “He was popular for all the right reasons - bubbly, helpful to everyone in the family and community. He was in the office on his own, he didn’t stand a chance.

“He cannot be replaced, he was so special to everyone. Yasa loved kids and family, we are in shock. He wasn’t a fighter like others it just wasn’t him. He never spoke of having problems with anyone, he was well-liked. He just worked and came home all the time.”

Ishtiaq Ahmed, another of the victim’s cousins, said : “We just ask everyone to pray for our son. He had no enemies, we just don’t understand it. We don’t know who could have done this.”

Yasa was working alone in the office, answering phone calls and dispatching taxis, when he was attacked at around 8pm.

Detectives say they are trying to trace a man seen entering the cab office for a brief moment around the time of the attack. The man was seen leaving and running towards Chant Street .

Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin, who is leading the inquiry, said : “We know the man was carrying a 'JD Sports' drawstring plastic bag and was wearing a distinctive deer-stalker type hat which has flaps covering his ears. I would urge anyone who may have seen him running towards Chant Street or nearby to call the incident room as soon as possible."

Police also appealed for people who were waiting at a bus stop outside the cab office or people on buses which stopped there to contact them.

Witnesses said a large crowd gathered around the office after the incident but that everyone seemed “calm”.

A by-stander, who declined to be named, said : “I was surprised to hear the boy had died but it does happen a lot in the area. The family are lovely - the boy and his brothers have always been really good, decent guys.

“It’s tragic but it happens here. The place is full of wolves. This will happen a thousand times over.”

Daniel Downes, who owns Swagga bar next door to Access Cars, said police tried “desperately” to save the young man’s life.

“I watched two officers fighting, in all that blood, to resuscitate him for a good while.”

Another man, who is thought to have been a friend of the victim, was killed several months ago in a similar attack, it was claimed.

Anyone with information is urged to call 020 8345 3865 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Your concern is touching Sussex............no doubt the family will appreciate it?

Working alone in an office like that is foolish.................as proved by events.................no doubt others in such situations will heed the warning...........if your employed in such a situation this will obviously alleviate the necessity of Risk assesment.

And of Course Stratford is a shytte hole par excellence notable for its particularly disgusting record of violence unhindered it seems by Police activity.........how surprising

Minicab murder: Controller stabbed to death by love rival, court hears

A minicab controller died after being stabbed 20 times by his love rival, a court heard this morning.

Mohammed Yasser Afzal, who was known by his middle name, had arranged to meet his “secret girlfriend” Nargis Riaz at E20 Cars control office in the Broadway, Stratford, on the night he was killed, prosecutor Sandip Patel QC told the Old Bailey.

The court head how Riaz had resumed a relationship with her ex Gulam Chowdhury, 24, in February 2013 but felt she could not break up with 22-year-old Mr Afzal because she feared he would show intimate photos to her family, who disapproved of him.

“Some members of his family knew that Miss Riaz was his girlfriend but little more,” said Mr Patel. “Even Mr Afzal’s brother met Miss Riaz for the first time only a week before his murder.”

This secrecy meant Mr Afzal, who lived in Norwich Road, Forest Gate, had told his cousin and a friend to leave the family firm on March 24 when he received a text from Riaz, 22, to say she would come round between 7pm and 7.30pm.

Mr Patel said: “[On that day] his brother worked the early shift from 8am to 4pm and Mr Afzal took over at about 4pm.

“A usual thing was that Mr Afzal had friends around to play computer games and while away the time.”

Shortly after law student at City University London Riaz arrived, witnesses reported seeing a man with his face concealed leap over the counter with one hand and drag Mr Afzal away from view of the CCTV cameras in the office, Mr Patel said.

The court heard how Chowdhury had admitted attacking Mr Afzal in a typed statement found in a pocket with Chowdhury’s name on it and dated March 25.

In it he allegedly maintained that he did not intend to kill Mr Afzal, only retrieve the phone which he believed had photos on it that would be used to blackmail Riaz.

The prosecution allege that Mr Afzal’s murder had been planned weeks in advance through a series of text messages and phone calls.

Riaz, of Fanshawe Avenue, Barking, and Chowdhury, of Heenan Close, Barking, both deny murder.

Muhammad Khan, 23, of Lindsey Road, Dagenham, also stands charged with assisting an offender.

The trial continues.

Minicab murder: Lovers plotted death of ‘problem’ boyfriend, court hears

The couple accused of murdering a minicab controller in his Stratford office exchanged thousands of text messages in the month leading up to his death, a court heard today.

Between March 3 and 28 last year, Nargis Riaz and Gulam Chowdhury sent around 8,000 messages to each other, discussing topics including their love for each other, religion and the “problem” of her boyfriend Mohammed Yasser Afzal, jurors at the Old Bailey were told.

Riaz, 22, and 24-year-old Chowdhury stand accused of Mr Afzal’s murder on March 24, 2014.

Prosecutor Sandip Patel QC said the couple had previously been in a relationship and that the first of the many messages, which were often written in text speak, was sent on February 24, 2014.

Chowdhury had been released from an immigration detention centre days before meeting up with his former lover, university law student Riaz, according to Mr Patel.

He said: “[Chowdhury] became a more devout Muslim during his time in the detention centre and wanted Miss Riaz to convert as well.”

One of the texts said that he would “happily enter hell” in order to be in a relationship with her.

Another sees Chowdhury, of Heenan Close, Barking, describe himself as a “psycho,” while a third said: “I can’t live with this. I need to kill someone.”

He also told her that he would “have that thing for you before your birthday,” which Mr Patel alleges is a reference to Mr Afzal’s death.

The messages were recovered from a laptop found in Riaz’s bedroom in Fanshawe Avenue, Barking.

They were backed up from her iPhone, which police found had been restored to its factory settings on the morning after Mr Afzal’s death, Mr Patel explained.

Texts were also sent between Chowdhury and his friend, 23-year-old Muhammad Khan, of Lindsey Close, Dagenham, who is charged with assisting an offender. The messages allegedly discussed “scoping out” Mr Afzal before his murder.

Jurors heard how one said: “I was going to get a black boy to steal [Mr Afzal’s] phone and make it look like a jacking.”

The trial continues.

Minicab murder: Barking love rival guilty of Stratford killing

A Barking man has been found guilty of murdering a minicab controller in Stratford last year.

A jury at the Old Bailey found Gulam Chowdhury, 24, guilty of killing Mohammed Yasser Afzal on March 24, 2014.

His girlfriend, Nargis Riaz, 22, who was also accused of murder, will face a retrial after the jury failed to return a verdict.

Mr Afzal, who lived in Norwich Road, Forest Gate, died after being stabbed at the E20 Cars control office in Stratford Broadway.

During the four week trial, the court heard how Mr Afzal, 22, was killed by love rival Chowdhury after his secret girlfriend Riaz felt she could not break up with him in case he showed intimate photos of her to her family.

Giving evidence during the trial, Riaz, of Fanshawe Avenue, had said she and Chowdhury, of Heenan Close, only planned to take Mr Afzal’s phone on the night he was stabbed.

The court heard that on the night Mr Afzal was killed, Chowdhury arrived at the cab office at around 8pm with an eight inch knife, vaulted the counter and attacked him before fleeing the scene.

He never regained consciousness and a post mortem examination revealed he had been stabbed 20 times.

Witnesses described how Chowdhury, who was wearing a distinctive JD Sports shoulder bag, had been seen lurking around Mr Afzal’s family cab office in the minutes before the stabbing.

He was placed at the scene following analysis of CCTV and phone records.

Det Insp Euan McKeeve called the attack a “ferocious assault”.

He said: “The level of violence used was shocking and ensured that Mohammed would not survive the attack.

“Whatever Mohammed’s motives were for the actions he took in attempting to maintain his relationship with a woman, he did not deserve to be murdered.”

A third defendant, Muhammed Khan, 23, of Lindsey Close, Dagenham, was found not guilty of assisting an offender in the case.

Chowdhury will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on May 1.

Stratford minicab worker killer jailed for 28 years

A man who killed a minicab dispatcher in a "ferocious" attack in east London has been jailed for 28 years.

Gulam Chowdhury, 24, was convicted of murdering his love rival Mohammed Yasser Afzal at the Old Bailey.

Mr Afzal was killed outside a cab office in Broadway, Stratford, in March 2014.

The court heard Chowdhury, of Barking, plotted to kill Mr Afzal because of a row over a woman who had been in a relationship with both men.

The woman had told Chowdhury that Mr Afzal had compromising pictures of her on a mobile phone.

She had said he was threatening to expose their relationship to her parents, who did not approve.

Mohammed Yasser Afzal was stabbed 20 times in the attack

Mr Afzal, from Forest Gate, was working at E20 Cars when he was stabbed 20 times in the attack on 24 March. He never regained consciousness.

Officers managed to place Chowdhury at the scene of the murder through mobile phone records.

Det Insp Euan McKeeve said: "Gulam Chowdhury carried out a ferocious assault on Mohammed Afzal.

"The level of violence used was shocking and ensured that Mohammed would not survive the attack."
