People asked how tinted taxi windows should be

South Bucks District Council is holding a consultation into how dark windows should be allowed to be in licensed vehicles

A consultation into how tinted taxi windows can be has been launched.

South Bucks District Council has begun an eight-week consultation into its policy on whether to allow licensed vehicles have a darker level of tinted windows.

The council said it has been put to consultation as it affects not just taxi drivers, but also people using the licensed vehicles.

People have said the suggestion is people feel safer in cars with lighter windows.

The licensing committee agreed to look at the council’s policy last October, arguing a new policy limiting the tint on rear windows to 30 per cent should be consulted upon.

The result of the first consultation found people had mixed reactions to the idea, prompting the committee to re-word its existing policy to make it clearer.

The document says: “Although this policy impacts directly upon those involved in the taxi trade, it also has wider implications for others as it is based upon the need to ensure the safety of the public travelling in licensed vehicles.”

Taxi windows now have to let in light up to 70 per cent, and 30 per cent through rear windows, front windscreens at least 75 per cent and front side windows at least 70 per cent.

All other windows, including the rear windscreen, would have at least 30 per cent of light.

The consultation lays out exceptions to the policy for executive private hire vehicles, like cars that are exempt from displaying plates.

The council has said the policy would be applied to new vehicles up for licensing but not ones already licensed.

The consultation runs from Friday, April 4, to Friday, May 16.

The council’s licensing committee will look at responses on July 2, 2014.

Does it matter?

The front windows and screens can't be tinted, so why worry?
