You will always struggle on MPG around town with an automatic. The type of car that you get should be one that will make you the most profit.

Hasnt the gap between mpg between autos and manuals closed in the past few years anyway?

The fact is that there is still a gap and you can get a manual car that will return over 40 MPG around town or this auto that will give you less than 30 MPG. so you will have to pay 30% more on fuel.
Your choice.

95% of all taxi/PH drivers cant be wrong, think about why they/we have diesel cars

for reliabilty, economy but more so for REpairabilty and price/availability of parts stick to Fords

Its not the diesel bit in question...Just the auto v manual!

Im going for diesel its just that the manual gearbox v auto gearbox which i have doubts about now. Grandad said an auto uses 30% more fuel. I read it as almost 50%

So now going for manual. shame really as I wanted the car to do most of the work.

whats your budget for a car and whats your base demand agewise?

does you LA have year, engine size or mileage restrictions for a 1st plate?

LA does not have any age restrictions, the base however does. Nothing pre 2006.
Engine size, min of 1.6. No mileage restriction as far as i aware.

My budget is £6k

Put about £2.5k as a deposit and get something new like the Skoda Octavia. Mine's doing about 60mph on diesel and it's auto and it costs f all in repairs and downtime. 23,000 miles and the only repair is the first service, £120.
