Barely seems possible I have now been driving full time for 18 months. Worrying thing is I still really enjoy the job! Maybe still the novelty factor. I have met so many interesting people I would not otherwise have come across, both customers and fellow drivers. Have to say there have been a few twits in both camps too!

I have managed to make a living, albeit working much longer hours than I would have hoped to in my 60th year.

I've learned a lot in the time and in a sense wish I had started many years earlier. It seems many people running the local taxi and PH trade are not businessmen if that makes sense. I often think I could have done better.

Out of curiosity, I would be keen to know what "rule of thumb" is used for pricing school jobs. We seem to be stuck on about £1.70 per mile with a minimum of £4 regardless of how long the job may take. At a local high school it can take 20 minutes just to get out of the pick up zone due to congestion. Jobs are sent out 10 mins before pick up and if drop off is within 2 miles you are in for up to 40 mins for £4. Office wonder why cars dissappear from the zone! Some drivers are on 50/50.

Hoping for a busy summer!

£1.70 per loaded mile (after £4?) is good

To clarify, a 3 mile job is £5.10 and a 1 mile would be £4 as that is the minimum. There are a few fixed price jobs, some better than others. I sometime manage to get a 3 mile job that for some reason is a FP of £10. Meter for 2 miles is £6.40

I always price my school jobs based on half the total miles of the round trip and the result is is priced according to our Council metered rate. So if the total miles for a job is 10 miles then I work on the 5 miles price which is £10.00. (£2.50 for the first 1/3 mile and £1.60 per mile after this.

Do all your school jobs have escorts that need returning home?

ive had 30 mile round trips (11 of which were loaded) twice a day with an escort - £45/day

50 miles (11 loaded) twice a day for £90/day

55 miles (30 loaded) twice a day for £70/day

the thing is its what i WANT that counts, not what someone else considers corretc

No.

So in those cases you're just charging normal rate then?

The vehicle element is always charged on the basis as stated. The cost of the escort is recorded separately. If the escort lives on the route to be take, they are picked up at home. If they don't then the driver and escort start work at our base.
I am not sure what you are trying to get at here but why don't you just say it rather than beat about the bush.
