Liverpool John Lennon Airport axes free drop-off parking near terminal .

Drivers will face minimum £2 charge to drop off passengers – unless they use a car park 10 minutes walk away

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Drivers visiting Liverpool John Lennon Airport will face a minimum £2 charge to drop off passengers – unless they use a car park 10 minutes walk away from the main terminal.

The airport is axing its free 5-minute drop-off point in favour of the new “express drop off and pick up” car park which will cost £2 for 20 minutes.

Bosses said the move, which will come into effect from 4 June, was in response to customer feedback.

A new car park called “Drop Off 2” which will be free to use for up to 20 minutes.

This new car park will be located in one of the existing car parks, and is a 10 min walk from the passenger terminal.

The airport said the new charges were introduced in response to customer feedback regarding the five minutes free parking period and to improve the traffic flow and levels of safety.

A new parking layout is to be introduced and equipment will be installed that improves the ease of use for drivers and provides improved weather protection for passengers.

The airport said to do this, it will be necessary to reduce the vehicle capacity in this area and make this a chargeable facility to restrict usage.

Bosses said the £2 charge for 20 minutes would save people using the express drop-off area, as currently drivers pay £4 for 20 minutes.

They said most other UK airports charge passengers to drop off and pick up passengers.

Short stay parking arrangements remain unchanged.

Robin Tudor, head of PR for for the airport said: “We have been keen to maintain a free facility for our customers, unlike most UK airports who no longer provide free drop off and pick up areas.

“Having listened to feedback, our solution improves the customer experience and provides passengers with a choice of where to drop off and pick up at the airport.”

And people have reacted angrily on the ECHO's Facebook page. Here's what some people had to say:

Luke Edwards: Companies wanting more and more money? I'd like to say am surprised, won't be long before am being taxed for breathing.

Stephen Anderson: What about people with special needs or can't walk as far? If provision is made, I have no immediate objection. Otherwise I oppose it 100%.

Rob Woods: Just another example of how the paying public is being fleeced out of every last penny by companies more eager to please shareholders.

Jenny Harrison: Glad I live just as close to Manchester and we're flying from there for our hols. Wouldn't choose Liverpool now.

Christopher Brimage: Going to add to taxi fares too unless they exempt cabs which I can't see them doing.

Edward Anchor: Try dragging suitcases from and to the car rental car parks on the other side of the road especially in pouring rain and winter...that's why JLA will never be able to compete with Manchester Airport.

To be fair, once through security the walk to the gate can be more than 10 minutes at many airports.

Just put it on the fare. If punters can afford to fly and use a cab, then I can't see £2 ending the world.

Or use one of those mobile things to meet up in the free car park.

That's why I don't do airports anymore. The last one I did was to East Mids, when they paid me before we set off I said, "it's an extra £1 for drop off." They said we aren't paying that we got quoted £31 and that's all we're paying. When I got there I dropped them at the Thistle Hotel. They said, "is that it can't you get us any closer?"

Watching them walk all the way to departures in the cold with 4 cases was a pleasure.

Just because "other airports" do it is no reason why JLA should need to follow like sheep. I'm sure if John Lennon were alive he would have written a protest song about it by now.

Clearly the customers said they would prefer to pay £2 rather than pay nothing, as if :roll:

1 = c
2 = c
3 = b, depending whether I am intending travelling to Germany or further in the aircraft!
