11 Prohibition of taximeters.

(1)No vehicle to which a London PHV licence relates shall be equipped with a taximeter.
(2)If such a vehicle is equipped with a taximeter, the owner of that vehicle is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.
(3)In this section “taximeter” means a device for calculating the fare to be charged in respect of any journey by reference to the distance travelled or time elapsed since the start of the journey (or a combination of both)

That's about as unclear as recently polished windows

I beg to differ.

The taximeter is not attached/equipped to the vehicle.

You won't find the word 'attached' in the above section and the Oxford dictionary defines equipped as follows;
Equip-verb
Supply with the necessary items for a particular purpose:
"all bedrooms are equipped with a colour TV" http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defin ... q=equipped

You wouldn't expect a tv to be attached to a bedroom, except in hotels charging by the hour instead of by the night :wink:

TfL may like to try this search on Google;
equipped site:www.tfl.gov.uk

Neither were radar detection devices, but the driver still got done under the Radio / Telegraphy act.

The LTDA today started private proceedings against some minicab drivers from uber for contravening the London PH act.

I'm sure Uber will back their slaves all the way.

Won't they? :wink:

All this kerfuffle, but the Dereg Bill and or the LC draft will 100% legalise this.

And as TfL are going to the courts for legal clarification, why the need for the demos? :-k

BECAUSE THEY TRUST THE COURTS :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin: FFS WHAT A QUESTION #-o

It's mainly to highlight just how [edited by admin] TFL are as a licensing body.

It's the press that have pitched it as an anti uber demo. Uber just happens to be the minicab company that broke the rules, and have been allowed to do so by TFL.

It could have been Lyft or any of the other hundreds of tax avoiding tos.sers from the USA.

Clearly London need to get with the same rules as every other council ffs, what's the problem with private hire having meters anyway :roll:

The law commision report does state that they want the new laws to include London and Plymouth.

ISTR using a minicab a few years back in Forest Hill, TfL licenced, that had a meter fitted (but it didn't work of course).

Yeah but if that happens you won't be able to move around London for spat out dummies :wink:

They recommend lots of things, but the whole report may never happen, or be taken any further by the next Government.

If it is, be sure we'll be making the strongest representations to retain the worlds highest entry standards. =D>

The standardisation is for Private Hire, not Hackney. You will be fine.

The topography test for private hire in London is a joke (i.e. the first question is to draw and name the four points of the compass).

If PH here were metered, and you had a rubbish driver who gets lost, and goes round in circles, you would be overcharged.

In the case of Uber, driver's have a rating system, where passengers can rate the driver out of 5 stars after the ride (something similar to eBay maybe), if the driver gets lost you would give them a low rating and eventually they'll soon get kicked off Uber (they have a cut off point, I believe).

After an Uber ride, you get e-mailed a receipt showing how the fare was calculated (base fare + distance + time), and a map (Google, naturally), showing the route the driver took. If you think the route wasn't a reasonably direct one, you can ask Uber for a fare review.

I have never had a problem with the route taken when I use them.
