I struggle to see how a London cabby stuck in gridlock can breach any law.

Are Uber using Hack or PH vehicles or a mix of Both or simply using Drivers with Un-plated Vehicles?

To work for Uber in London, you need to be a licenced TfL private hire driver, with a licenced TfL car.

As with other private hire operators in London, they ask for original copies of your V5 logbook, private hire vehicle licence, certificate of motor insurance, MOT (if car is over a year old), for each car you wish to use. They also require your private hire vehicle driver licence, and driving licence.

They will then photocopy these documents, give you an iPhone with their app loaded onto it, and away you go.

20% is not a lot considering they have the card processing fees to consider, as well as running their app and other overheads, plus they don't charge you for the use of their iPhone. It is not different to paying a set rent/circuit fee to other PH firms.

Other companies using GPS based software also track your movements, not just Uber's. You turn the unit off when you're not working.

As most Uber drivers are part time, it makes sense to charge a commission, rather than a set fee.

If you're a good driver, then the star rating won't be a problem. Rubbish drivers who persistently get low star ratings, will soon get kicked off the system, as they've got a cut-off point.

Technology or not, whether it's fare Distance is conventionally calculated through an on board Taxi meter or by a technology driven GPS system as I understand UBER uses then its all effectively charged through some means of a meter.

If Uber were true to the way PH works then they would have to stick to any price agreed upon at the point of Booking or at the very least base it on a set price per mile as explained to the customer, but to be pre-booked and then rely on a GPS metered to charge the fare is surely wrong.

By all means embrace the technology but use it within the current parameters of the law, but Uber appears to act first then expects the law to adapt to them rather than them adapt to the law.

It's an Odd one, legal or otherwise!
