London at a standstill but Uber claims taxi strike victory

Thousands of cab drivers brought London to a standstill, but the app they're protesting about claimed a surge in sign-ups

Uber has witnessed an 850% rise in sign ups, despite the London-based strike

By Rhiannon Williams and Matt Warman

Up to 12,000 taxicab drivers brought central London to a standstill today, leaving key capital arteries around St James, Leicester Square and Piccadilly in gridlock.

Organised by the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, the protest claims mobile app Uber is operating illegally. The app can be used to book rides in both licensed taxis and minicabs and measures the journey distance to calculate a fare which is paid direct to the driver. The LTDA argues that it acts like a taxi meter, which private cars are not allowed to use, and has helped to organise a protest which promised “severe chaos, congestion and confusion across the metropolis”. On Wednesday they appeared to have delivered it.

Transport for London has reached a preliminary ruling that permits Uber to operate, but referred the case to the High Court for clarification. The LTDA claims Uber should be banned or regulated differently.

Uber claimed sign-ups to the app rocketed by 850 per cent, however, as it also announced it had added black cabs to its service for the first time.

Jo Bertram, the app's UK and Ireland general manager, said it had seen its biggest day of sign ups since it launched in London two years ago.

"Today we’re seeing an 850 per cent increase in sign-ups compared to last Wednesday. The results are clear: London wants Uber in a big way. Unsurprisingly, the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association (LTDA), which is stuck in the dark ages, is intent on holding London to ransom and causing significant economic impact to Londoners today, estimated to be £125m," she said.

“We join Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police in calling on the LTDA and others to call off this unnecessary and irresponsible strike. We passed TfL’s most stringent and comprehensive audit of a Private Hire Vehicle operator to date, passing with flying colours. We are proud to be in London, we are proud to serve London, and we are here to stay. Uber on London!”

Uber had added black cabs to its UberX, EXEC and LUX cars, allowing users to select UberTAXI from the app's vehicle options.

The San Francisco-founded app works by pinpointing the passenger's location via their smartphone's GPS. Once they have selected their desired model of car, pressing 'request' will alert you to the nearest available driver.

A cab driver will be alerted to a passenger's direct location, and the fare for the journey will be processed through the passenger’s existing Uber payment details - removing the need to make a last minute stop at a cash point.

Steve McNamara, of the LTDA, told the BBC: "We have nothing against competition but we feel that Transport for London has failed Londoners by allowing Uber to operate outside the law."

Wonder who quoted those figures......surely not someone who wants the publicity

they've had free publicity all day

All day.
All week.
All month.
All year.

And cab drivers charge the same out of town rate on a Tuesday morning as on a Saturday night-time? :?

Correct.

You could say London taxis have their own form of "surge pricing" (ie Tariffs 2 and 3), which always occur between 20:00 and 06:00 on weeknights and all day on weekends/public holidays, regardless of demand or supply.

However, their minimum charge/flagfall (£2.40) is a lot lower than Uber's £6/£10/£14 (UberX/UberExec/UberLux, respectively). So swings and roundabouts.

Nevertheless, Uber's surge usually happens when there's sudden peaks and troughs in supply and demand. Usually it doesn't last more than a few minutes, as riders wait for the surge to end, drivers from surrounding areas of the surge, will drive into the surge area, thus balancing out the supply and demand. It is also rare that all 3 Uber services are on surge at the same time (Lux is usually the last to surge). Unless of course there is an ongoing situation, which results the surge to last a period of time (i.e. heavy traffic caused by inclement weather, tube strikes, etc.)

What a cracking day :D

Thousands turned up, gridlock ensued and all the main news channels were there. I think we made all the main bulletins at 6pm and 10pm. That'll do me.

Apart from concentrating on 'the minicab app', most news channels did eventually pick up on the main theme of the demo which was TFL are crap at their jobs.

I'm sure old Hendy was spitting feathers (with his hired mistress?) and I hope his blood pressure went through the roof. Lots of support from Piers Morgan, Stephen Fry. Kevin Pieterson, Mitch Winehouse and other well known commentators.

TFL dragged out Harry Mount the cab hater onto LBC, and apart from that chinless wonder most people I spoke with in the street were very understanding of our gripes.

I'm sure those at the top are now very aware of just how incompetent those at the top of TFL are.

Will it bring instant change to TFL's attitude? Probably not, but it will eventually . . .

And Uber has decided to lauch 'Uber Taxi' in London, urging licensed Taxis to sign up . . . to help Uber avoid even more tax.

The best part was, they're offering the work for 5% commission on the meter (Our meters!) whilst charging their PH drivers 20% with silly rock bottom fares.

(I wouldn't worry Christopher, I can't see a big take up on their offer!)

For some cracking pictures, pop onto flickr and look at Justin Sneddon's photo stream. He captures the day quite nicely.

Bob Oddy even made an appearance. #-o

Daniels is surface transport, bur Hendy has overall control.

Ultimately it stops at Johnson, but he'd just make a gag about it and ruffle his hair......

If taxi drivers really want to create a sh*tstorm - withdraw services from 11PM Saturday night when the pubs will be rammed with drunken football fans.
