On this subject, I have a leaky steering box on my Fairway Driver (per the norm). As recommended by the ex-cabbie I bought it from, I just top it up now and then.

However, occasionally, and mercifully at low speed, the steering seizes up when trying to steer left. It is only left, and it releases if I spin the wheel the other way and back. It is obviously a problem but what is the solution? I hope it is not to simply fit a new steerign box because they seem to cost the earth!

Any ideas?

RW

Sounds like the pinion is knackered in the box only solution is a replacement unit they are around £140 fitted with a 6 months warranty.

The only answer is a replacement box. You should be able to get a secondhand one,try and find one not covered in fluid.

That's really helpful - thanks guys.

Is this the best place to order them (I am in Jersey): http://www.londontaxigroup.com/product/ ... way-sfx112

Also, do I need an SFX112 or 114 for my 1997 Fairway Driver?

The price is £410 which seems loads but apparently they refund you a part of that when they receive your old steering box in exchange. I have emailed them to find out how much they refund, so what the actual cost is.

How long can I expect a new/refurbished box to last before leaking? As long as 10 minutes...?

Cheers guys.

Apparently it's £205 net plus VAT plus shipping. Where is better to get it from?
