Minicab driver accused of falling asleep at the wheel as he drove baby home from hospital

A minicab driver fell asleep at the wheel as he drove a baby home from hospital, the tot’s furious parents claimed.

Kelly Gulliver and Paul Teece said they shouted in terror as the car lurched into the middle of one of Birmingham’s busiest roads.

The couple were returning from hospital after having five-month-old Hope checked for a chest problem.

Kelly, 26, said: “It was clear the driver was trying to keep himself awake.

“At one point the car juddered as he veered on to the cats eyes in the middle of the road.

“I then spotted his face in the mirror and he had dropped off to sleep.

“We shouted at him to wake up and told him to stop the car.

“We had paid him £15 up front and demanded the money back, which he gave us.”

The couple said the driver fell asleep on Chester Road as he drove them from Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield to their home at Rough Coppice Walk, Castle Vale.

They booked the ride through cab firm Kingstanding Cars just before 12.30am on May 27.

But Kelly, a Heartlands Hospital worker, said she was immediately worried by the driver sent to collect them.

“He had the window wound right down,” she said.

“We asked him if he could wind it up as my daughter had just been to hospital with a bad chest and we didn’t want her condition made worse.

“We were fortunate we spotted he was struggling to stay awake.

“He should not have been driving that night as, for whatever reason, he couldn’t keep his eyes open.”

Kelly said her family ended their journey a mile short of their home after the row and called another company to collect them.

She has made a formal complaint to Kingstanding Cars, based in Hawthorn Road, Kingstanding.

Company manager Mohammed Arif said: “We have apologised to Miss Gulliver for the incident.

“We ensure the drivers we use stick to set shifts and don’t work beyond those hours.

“This driver had started his shift at 9pm so he was just over three hours into it.

“It may be that he was taking medication which made him drowsy.

“The driver is not directly employed by us but is self-employed.

“But we look into this and we will be having a word with the driver.”

You can't comprehend some people can you? If he's on medication then like you said he shouldn't be driving full stop. If he had an accident they insurance company would've washed their hands on him and the company.

Personally, I've fallen asleep for a few seconds and nearly sh*t myself, when I awoke startled, and that was with punters in the back of the cab. I've also, driven home after a shift and could not remember the journey upon arriving at my address.

The difference between myself and this guy in the thread, is luck.

What you are actually talking about here is a prime reason to have Minicabs/Taxis tachographed for public safety.

Oh and I think we can dispense with the medication bullshit!!

I heard of a company in Germany that had this when they allowed an employee to drive from the airport after a long day and flight. the driver fell asleep at the wheel and a passenger was killed when they left the road. That Company now use taxis for every airport trip they do around the world.
