Boston Lawyer Suing Uber for ‘Exploiting Drivers’

Uber has faced a lot of criticism since its inception four years ago. Now, the company faces a new challenge. A well-known Boston lawyer is suing Uber, claiming the company exploits drivers.

The Boston Globe reports that lawyer Shannon Liss-Riordan filed a suit Thursday in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston, accusing Uber of “misclassifying drivers as independent contractors to avoid paying them the same as employees with benefits.”

The case also charges that Uber does not give drivers the total proceeds they receive from gratuities and “retains a portion of the gratuity for itself.” That alleged conduct violates the Massachusetts Tips Law, said Liss-Riordan.

Uber, launched in 2010 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, instantly connects riders to personal drivers through a smart phone app.

Though the company has raised more than $1.2 billion from investors, it has faced serious criticism from taxi companies arguing that an unregulated taxi service like Uber is a safety threat.

Well they wouldn't be the first to exploit drivers and I doubt they'll be the last
