Double delight for Coventry black cab firm London Taxi Company

Just months after it was on the brink of collapse, London Taxi Company have made the 1,000th TX4 and recorded best performance since 2008

Coventry's world-famous black cab firm is celebrating two major milestones – just months after it was on the brink of collapse.

The London Taxi Company has revealed a record-breaking March, with 243 new vehicles sold, registered and handed over to customers.

It takes the total new vehicles sold to an impressive 639 by the end of June – the company’s best performance since 2008.

London Taxi Company director of retail, Rob Laidler said: “It’s extremely encouraging that our vehicle sales are following the general trend for UK automotive sales. We absolutely believe that our focus on putting customer requirements at the core of our business, as well as the quality of our team, has been integral in ensuring that we experience the benefits of improving economic conditions.

“Our customers have a choice as to which vehicle they invest their money, future and business in, and we are working hard to continuously improve the product and service quality.

“There have been some quick wins and we plan more enhancements as a result of customer feedback however, the advancements we have made and customer loyalty we have experienced has obviously given us added confidence that we are headed in the right direction.”

Staff at the business in Holyhead Road, Coundon, have also celebrated making the 1,000th TX4 since the restart of production in September last year.

Production restarted six months after the company was rescued by its Chinese owners Geely Group who, since buying the firm for £11.4 million, have made a significant investment in its Coventry manufacturing facilities and have created a wealth of new jobs.

Mr Laidler added: “Given the challenges of restarting production, as well as the implementation of new quality monitoring and management processes, we are all extremely proud of the hard work and determination demonstrated by our colleagues working in Production. This is an exciting period of development and progress for the entire company; we still have much that we want to achieve and implement, however, this milestone should quite rightly be a moment for the team to pause and reflect on positively.”

The milestones follow last week’s announcement that an additional 500 new cabs for Azerbaijan will feature as part of the opening ceremony of the inaugural European Games.
