Cabbie first in London to only accept payment through mobile phone app

A pioneering London cabbie will today become the capital’s first cashless black cab driver by trialling a new mobile phone app.

Veteran cab driver Ian Cable will be testing out the cash-free app this week as the capital begins to get rid of coins and notes altogether.

Mr Cable, from Tonbridge, has been a black cab driver for 23 years and was also the first driver to embrace chip and pin technology in 2004.

From today until Friday, he will be refusing hard cash.

Passengers will be able to download the free app, then scan a code in the cab to transfer the funds.

The application has been dowloaded more than three million times over the last 18 months, with one in four users living in London.

Mr Cable said: “I am very excited to take part in this trial. I have been a cabbie for many years and am always up for trying new technology to help make mine and my passenger’s lives easier.

"I was the first black cab driver in London to accept chip and pin back in 2004 and I will be the first to trial only accepting payment by Barclays Pingit.

“Not only is the app convenient for my passengers, because they don’t need to worry about getting cash out, it means I have more time on the road to earn money - rather than stopping off at the bank to pay in my earnings or pulling up at ATM’s for passengers with the risk of getting a hefty parking fine.”

Correct, if a pin head gets in my car they soon get the out treatment.

Seems bloody odd that while everyone else looks for more methods of payment others look for just one, having all your eggs in one basket is never a wise thing to do..

Some clients can hardly use their phone at the best of times little less when they are half [edited by admin], so what chance of them using this technology without issues.

Cash is King...it'll never be otherwise, It can be used when technology fecks up and it's the best method of tipping their is.

Not sure the chap can legally refuse a punter if they only have cash and no phone or cards.

I wonder however if he would refuse a £300 cash job?

Another gimmick.

He's going to be skint if he refuses (and he can't) cash paying punters.

If I do 20 jobs in a day, you'd be lucky if one asks for CC facilities.

I use cabapp for cc transactions nowadays. Simple, and cost free for me.

He better hope that all his jobs already have the app installed.

I decided to install the app. It probably took about 20mins till I had it installed and active. If I'd been anywhere else other than at home I couldn't have done it as I needed my sort code and account number I wanted to link the app to. I don't carry anything on me that has them, and I couldn't have accessed my account from my phone as it needs one of those little number generating devices to log in.

Can't understand why all Taxi Drivers don't have cabapp. Even if you don't want the jobs that come up, the CC facility is a "No Brainer", I wouldn't be without it. It is of no use to PH - they aren't allowed on.
