Taxi ban sparks row over Fastlink route restrictions


TAXI drivers have hit out at plans for new bus-only lanes along the Fastlink bus route.

Last week the Evening Times revealed how four new bus-lane cameras would be installed and there would be new road restrictions to ensure buses get priority on the route from the city centre to the new South Glasgow Hospitals.

The plan involved two new cameras on the 'Squinty' bridge and another two in Govan. Also included are some lanes which will be bus-only, with taxis, private hire cars and cycles banned from them.

Glasgow Taxis, which operates the city's black cabs said the move will cost customers and suggested it was a money-making venture. Taxi drivers who stray into the lanes could face fines and potentially other action from the taxi enforcement unit.

Stephen Flynn, vice chairman of Glasgow Taxis Ltd, said: "It's disappointing to see licensed taxis prohibited from sections of these lanes.

"If nothing else this will have an impact on the paying customer - be that a local resident or a visiting tourist - who may face being forced to wait in traffic and pay more.

"It could also see licensed taxis held up through no fault of their own and delayed in attending pick-ups at schools, shopping centres or businesses when that situation could be easily avoided.

"The high fines in place do suggest this is another money making exercise - we'd urge those behind the scheme to have a rethink."

A report to inform bus operators of the regulations of the scheme states: "Taxis, licensed private hire cars and bicycles will be able to use 'With-flow Bus Lanes' but will be prohibited from using 'With Flow Bus Only Lanes' and 'Bus Only Routes' as part of the council's commitment to the scheme."

It said taxi operations on the Fastlink route will be monitored and infringements reported to the Taxi and private hire enforcement unit.

Glasgow City Council said there had been a chance to object to the plans. A spokesman said: "Traffic Regulation Orders for the Fastlink route were published on 18 December 2013. During the six week consultation no objections were received from Glasgow Taxis."

Fastlink is due to be completed next year to coincide with the hospital opening.

The Bigger the Council the Bigger the Numbnuts that run them...Is there an Authority to Numbnuts ratio that can be Mathematically determined.

It's to both appease the Greens by promoting buses and also to earn some easy Greenbacks from the hard pushed trade and to give em a kick in the chooks for good measure..just because they can.

No doubt the City council roads department will be efficient in their modus operandi.
For the benefit of all hackney trade.
Roads signs will be clear and unambiguous that 'with flow ' are not 'bus and taxi' lanes and are no go for hackney trade.

Wo betide the first out if town taxi dropping of thinking taxis are public transport and these lanes are for the benefit of the paying public.

In fact I am a taxi operating a bus service as defined by my licence conditions. I am double ok .

Wonder if Glasgow City Council have got it all covered?

I thought there was now case law, that taxis are public transport, due to the London bus lanes and Addison lee

I may be corrected but as it is an English case law it would not be binding in Scotland although it would lend weight to the argument if tested in Scots Law.

Suppose the easy answer for a Dickhead is just to not pay the fines and let the Council take it to court.

I got the Dickhead bit the first time TT.
And yet the courts have proved conducive to my rights twice already. Lost on TKO the third, as the other guy had rights too.
Presently contemplating a square go with my Council in the same arena.
Just had to settle for pragmatic draw in a major scrap with them which hurt like hell.

So the prospect of a quick return to the ring albeit for a lesser purse is appealing.

But it's not about the lucre is it TT.

For sure your the best judge on your manor ........................but i have an aversion to enriching lawyers ..............always go for Industrial Action meself if successfull your made for life .....................anyway good luck with yer RUCK

CC do you have a copy of the Add Lee bus lane judgment or could you or anyone provide a link

Just use them, they can't do nothing about it. If you get a ticket ask for a bill of exchange and a contract. If they contact you after you've asked for the Bill of Exchange they've broken section 1 of the protection from harassment act.
