£20 on-the-spot fine for idling diesel drivers Islington Council is introducing a new £20 fine for those who leave their diesel cars idling on the road, in attempt to help meet European environmental targets.
It is well known that diesel fumes pose a greater threat to emission standards than petrol fumes and, in this case, it is the main crux of Islington Council’s argument.
As diesel contains more harmful nitrogen dioxide, Islington Council will be looking to fine those who leave their cars running while sat in them stationary or leaving them parked up.
This is likely to have a big impact on vehicles that are susceptible to idling outside school gates, taxi ranks, bus stops or even shopping areas.
An on-the-spot fine of £20 can be given to those who refuse to turn off their engines, which can be increased to £40 if the fine is not paid promptly.
Those who have stop/start technology will not be as affected as others, as this tech feature automatically turns off the car’s engine when sat in traffic or parked. Some may argue that those without stop/start could be wasting fuel by constantly turning their car’s engine on and off.
Aside to this new idling fine, diesel drivers have recently received more bad news, with London mayor Boris Johnson announcing that diesel cars will have to pay an extra £10 on top of the London Congestion Charge to enter the capital.
